Supergirl ended its fourth season foiling the dastardly plans of uber-villain Lex Luthor — while setting the stage for a number of new stories in the show’s upcoming fifth season.
Before Supergirl’s fall premiere, we’ve gathered all the information you need to know about the show’s new season.
When will Supergirl Season 5 premiere?
Supergirl will continue to air new episodes on Sunday nights this fall. However, the show will be moving from the 8 pm hour to the 9 pm hour just after the new Arrowverse series Batwoman.
The fifth season premiere is set for Sunday, October 6 at 9/8c on The CW.

Supergirl’s Cast
Supergirl will continue to be led by Melissa Benoist as the title character and her alter-ego Kara Danvers.
Many of the regular characters from last season will return, including Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers, David Harewood as J’onn J’onnz, Katie McGrath as Lena Luthor, Jesse Rath as Brainiac-5, and Natalie Maines as Nia Nall/Dreamer.
In addition, Andrea Brooks will also be back as Eve Teschmacher, and we’ll be seeing more of Azie Tesfai, who was introduced as James Olsen’s sister, Kelly, last season.
On the other hand, James Olsen actor Mehcad Brooks, has decided to leave the show to pursue other projects. His departure will happen sometime during the fall.
While fans will surely miss seeing James Olsen on a weekly basis, another beloved character is returning to the series. Jeremy Jordan who played Winn Schott for Supergirl’s first three seasons will be making a guest appearance sometime during season 5.
It’s believed that Winn will come back to the show in the second half of the season for a three-episode arc.
In addition, Jon Cryer’s Lex Luthor and Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman will return for the season’s upcoming Arrowverse crossover event, “Crisis on Infinite Earths.”
The new season will also include several new characters.
In the season premiere, Jennifer Cheon Garcia will guest as the villain Midnight. Meanwhile, Julie Gonzalo will play Andrea Rojas, the alter-ego of comics’ vigilante Arcata, and Staz Nair will play William Dey, a cynical reporter.
At some point in the season, Meaghan Rath will be introduced as a female version of Brainiac-5. This casting is especially appropriate given Meaghan is the sister of Supergirl’s Brainy actor, Jesse Rath.
Finally, Kate Micucci will guest in Supergirl’s season premiere as a museum worker.
This Season’s Story
Last season Supergirl commented on real-world concerns by looking at prejudice towards aliens. This season will continue to pursue social justice issues, but this time the show will turn its attention to technology and its impact on people and their relationships.
Co-showrunner Robert Rovner explained that the season will explore, “how technology is impacting the way people engage and giving them an escape not to engage.” Meanwhile, co-showrunner Jessica Queller simply called the upcoming batch of new episodes Supergirl’s “Black Mirror season.”
Part of the technology theme will be driven by the activities of Katie McGrath’s Lena Luthor. In particular, the fallout from Lena’s discovery that her best friend Kara is actually Supergirl will loom large over the season.
In the season four finale, The Monitor brought J’onn J’onnz’s brother to National City to pursue vengeance against J’onn, something that’s bound to have consequences this season.
The evil organization Leviathan, which was seen preventing Eve Teschmacher from leaving National City at the end of last season, will also play a role in the storylines for the new season.
Supergirl’s New Look
Supergirl will be sporting a brand-new look in season 5. She has a new hairstyle that includes bangs.
However, the biggest news is that she’ll be sporting a brand new superhero suit — and it replaces the skirt the Girl of Steel’s worn for the past four seasons with pants.
Trailer and Episode 1 Teaser
A trailer for Supergirl’s fifth season was released during San Diego Comic-Con in July.
And the CW has dropped a teaser for the first episode of season 5, “Event Horizon.”
