The Proposal producer questions blame after sexual assault scandal, but admits: ‘We must do better’

The Proposal ABC
The Proposal, which is airing on Monday nights on ABC, has been shrouded in controversy

The Proposal seems to be causing a lot of problems for ABC considering it’s only right at the beginning of its run.

Before the show even began, viewers were debating the whole concept behind it on Twitter. How could people who had never met get engaged and expect to stay together?

Then came the whole debacle of the second episode of The Proposal, which was pulled from the ABC schedule because one of the contestants, Michael J. Friday, was linked to an alleged sexual assault case.

The alleged victim of the scandal decided to speak out after ABC revealed who was on the episode. No charges are believed to have been laid against Friday, but the producers didn’t want to take any chances and they decided to pull the episode.

However, now one of the show’s producers, Mike Fleiss, who also works on long-standing shows including The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, has taken to Twitter to give his take on the situation — questioning how producers were supposed to know about a case which has never been reported.

How are we supposed to find out about something that’s never been reported??? #TheProposal

It comes after ABC viewers recently learned that contestant Lincoln Adim from The Bachelorette was charged with assault against a woman before appearing on the show. The sentencing happened after he was sent home.

Following his initial tweet, Fleiss also acknowledged that producers needed to “find ways to do better”.

For the record, I am horrified that any of these abusive assholes are on our shows. We are working very hard to find ways to do better.

While Fleiss didn’t mention Michael J. Friday or Lincoln Adim by name, it sounds like contestants from both The Proposal and The Bachelorette will be undergoing thorough background checks in the future.

The Bachelorette airs Mondays at 8/7c and The Proposal airs Mondays at 10/9c, both on ABC.
