Astoria, Oregon sits on the mouth of the Columbia River and serves as the backdrop for the latest episode of Ghost Adventures. The four-part series titled Graveyard of the Pacific looks into the paranormal that may be haunting the coastal Oregon town.
The Graveyard of the Pacific refers to a stretch of coastline from Tillamook Bay to Vancouver Island. More than 2,000 shipwrecks occurred in this area due to unpredictable weather coupled with a jagged, rocky coastline. It’s the area where fresh water meets the salt of the ocean.
In addition to the treacherous waters of the Pacific Northwest, even more lives were lost due to unexplained death, disease, murders, and fires. The history of Astoria and the mouth of the Columbia River sets the perfect stage for a slew of hauntings and this area in Oregon is rife with haunted locations including an underground tunnel system.
Other haunted locations include Norblad Hostel and the Fort Stevens Military Base. On the other side of the state line, Ghost Adventures will finish the four-part series as they explore the North Head Lighthouse in Washington, which is said to have seen some of the nastiest shipwrecks of the Columbia basin.

Astoria Underground
Part one of the Ghost Adventures investigation goes underneath the city of Astoria, where a system of underground tunnels is said to be haunted. Historically, the tunnels were used to transport good from the docks to the restaurants and hotels without clogging up traffic on the street.
While the concept for the tunnel system is brilliant, the darkness of the tunnels made it the perfect spot to breed crime, disease and other dangers that would take the lives of many who braved the underground tunnels. Because of that, many are afraid to venture into the tunnel system, believing it to be one of the most haunted parts of the city.
H.P. Lovecraft
H.P. Lovecraft is mentioned several times by Ghost Adventures’ Zak and his crew because of the horror writer’s connection to the Astoria tunnels. Known posthumously for his contributions to the horror fiction genre, many of Lovecraft’s stories are tied to the horrors that happened in the Astoria tunnels and other parts of the town.
Norblad Hostel
On the second part of the Ghost Adventures: Graveyard of the Pacific miniseries, Zak and company will head to the Norblad Hostel, which is located in the heart of downtown Astoria. The historic hotel is still around today and those who are daring enough can even rent a room but after learning its history, Ghost Adventures viewers may not want to…or maybe they will!

Now touted as a budget hotel facing 14th street, the haunted hostel was established in 1923 by George F. Norblad on the second floor of the Miller-Jeffers building.
On the next episode of Ghost Adventures, the team will be heading to the basement of this historic building, where they run into “a very dangerous and unholy presence.” The team will interview several people about the history of the hotel and the spirits that might still live in it.
