Columbus forward Rick Nash, Minnesota's Brian Rolston, Yanic Perreault of the Phoenix Coyotes and Martin Havlat of Chicago, all scored two goals, as the NHL All-Star Game returned from a three-year hiatus with a 12-9 victory by the Western Conference over the Eastern Conference at American Airlines Center. This marked the 55th All-Star Game in league history, but the first since February of 2004. The combination of the labor wars that wiped out the 2004-05 season and last February's Winter Olympics -- in which NHL players compete -- caused the league to nix the mid- season classic for the last two years. Teemu Selanne, Lubomir Visnovsky and San Jose captain Patrick Marleau each added a goal for the Western Conference. Buffalo sniper Daniel Briere garnered the MVP honors with a goal and four assists for the Eastern Conference, which featured first-time All-Stars Sidney Crosby of Pittsburgh and Washington's Alexander Ovechkin, who notched a goal in the second period. Both Crosby and Ovechkin were voted as starters, as was Briere. Defenseman Zdeno Chara of Ottawa scored twice while Tampa Bay's Martin St. Louis, Carolina's Eric Staal and Dany Heatley of Ottawa were among the other goal scorers for the East. Six goaltenders combined to play in the game. Roberto Luongo of Vancouver started for the West and was replaced by Miikka Kiprusoff and hometown favorite Marty Turco in the second and third periods, respectively. Buffalo netminder Ryan Miller started for the Eastern Conference, while future Hall of Famer Marty Brodeur of New Jersey and Cristobal Huet of Montreal saw action as well.
