NCAA Football Preview - Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Aug 25, 2007, 17:07 GMT

OFFENSE: The Tech offense averaged a solid 24.9 ppg last season and although it only averaged 332.1 yards per game, the ground game was solid (162.4 ypg) and the passing game possessed the best offensive weapon in the nation in standout receiver Calvin Johnson. The offense was under the leadership of inconsistent QB Reggie Ball the last few seasons, but his reign is now over and the offense will be turned over to junior signal-caller Taylor Bennett (6-3, 215), who got two starts last season, including a great performance in last year's Gator Bowl (326 yards and three TDs). Replacing Ball isn't the problem, but replacing Johnson will be impossible. The All-American went third in the NFL Draft last season, after finishing his junior campaign with 76 receptions, for 1,202 yards and 15 TDs. The other offensive weapon, tailback Tashard Choice, does return, after rushing for an ACC-best 1,473 yards in 2006, with 12 TDs. A steady diet of Choice on the ground is clearly the way to go this year, as head coach Chan Gailey sees what he has in the passing game. Look for junior James Johnson (39 receptions, for 608 yards and seven TDs) to become the go-to-guy downfield for Tech, although a lot is expected of redshirt freshman Demaryius Thomas (6-3, 220). The offensive line returns four of its five starters, including 6-6, 300-pound left tackle Andrew Gardner, who was an all-conference honorable mention last season.

Detroit Lions 2007 Draft Preview

Apr 4, 2007, 15:05 GMT

For all the speculation about the Lions taking Brady Quinn, Calvin Johnson, or trading down for multiple picks, it would still fly in the face of the logic if GM Matt Millen does anything other than draft Wisconsin left tackle Joe Thomas at No. 2. There's a reason Jon Kitna was sacked 63 times last year. For a majority of Detroit's remaining eight selections, defensive help should be the focus. The Lions lack a first-rate pass rusher, need to locate a trio of linebackers that can play, and are in major need of secondary help following the offseason defections of cornerback Dre' Bly and safety Terrence Holt. If Detroit selects a quarterback, it probably won't happen until the second day.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2007 Draft Preview

Apr 4, 2007, 15:05 GMT

If he is still available at No. 4, there is no way the Buccaneers can pass up Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson. However, if another team trades up to snatch Johnson with one of the first three picks, it won't be the end of the world for Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers also need a pass rusher and run-stopping defensive tackle in a big way, and DE Gaines Adams (Clemson) and DT Alan Branch (Michigan) will both be available at No. 4. No matter what happens, look for at least three of Tampa's four first-day picks to come on the defensive side of the ball, where the Bucs have crossed the threshold from aging to aged. The offensive line has the potential to be OK following the signing of guard Matt Lehr (ex-Falcons) and tackle Luke Petitgout (ex-Giants), but Tampa remains in need of some depth in the trenches.

Oakland Raiders 2007 Draft Preview

Apr 2, 2007, 20:10 GMT

Draftniks everywhere are sitting on pins and needles waiting to see what the Raiders will do with the No. 1 pick. Conventional wisdom says that offensively-challenged will select strong-armed LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell, though there are schools of thought suggesting that the Silver and Black should draft either Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson or trade down in order to further fortify a thin roster. Whatever happens at No. 1, the Raiders will not have addressed their only need by any stretch. Oakland needs at least two impact offensive linemen, and at least one who can join the mix to start at tackle. A pass-catching tight end would serve new head coach Lane Kiffin's offense quite well also. Defense is perceived to be among the team's strengths, but depth is an issue across the board on that side of the ball and the face of the defense, tackle Warren Sapp, will turn 35 before the 2007 season ends.

NCAA Football Preview - Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Aug 18, 2006, 18:00 GMT

OFFENSE: It was another up and down season for the Tech offense, as quarterback Reggie Ball's inconsistent play led to a mere 18.5 ppg. Ball, who excelled as a freshman a couple of years ago, has struggled in the role since, including completing just 48 percent of his passes last season, for 2,165 yards, with 11 TDs and 12 interceptions. It has somewhat retarded the growth of All-American wideout Calvin Johnson, who finished 2006, with 54 catches, for 888 yards and six TDs. Despite the play of his quarterback, Johnson is still one of the best wide receivers in the college ranks. At 6-4, 235 pounds is a big menacing target downfield, with enough burst to run over or around would-be tacklers. Johnson is clearly the crown-jewel of the Tech offense in 2006, especially with talented tailback P.J. Daniels moving on. Daniels rushed for just under 1,000 yards last season and will be missed. The hope is that Oklahoma transfer Tashard Choice will emerge as one of the conference's top rushers. Despite limited carries in 2005, Choice was able to roll up 513 yards and six TDs. If he is a workhorse this season, he should easily double both stats. The offensive front returns four starters, including sophomore tackle Andrew Gardner (6-6, 300), who was a First-Team Freshman All-American in 2005. Senior Mansfield Wrotto will once again move back to the right tackle position and should be a mainstay along the offensive line all year long.
