Love First Family of Hip Hop? So do we! We’ve started doing a backgrounder series on the stars — and first up is the amazing Shanell ‘Lady Luck’ Jones.

So who is Shanell, and what’s her background?

Shanell is a multiple RIAA gold and platinum-certified rap artist. You might have also heard of her aunt Sylvia Robinson, who founded Sugarhill Records.

Shanell, or Lady Luck as she came to be known, began her career on New York’s Hot 97 morning show while she was still in high school.

As a result of her performances, she was offered a multi-million dollar record deal by Def Jam — when she was only 16 years old!

After three years, she chose to cut her ties with Def Jam in order to carve out an independent career, fine-tuning her style and becoming increasingly well-known for her witty freestyling.

Lady Luck has always been someone who pushes herself forward and gives new things a go. As well as performing, she has tried her hand at producing and writing, and loves the creative side of the music business.

Recently, Lady Luck and her girlfriend Somaya Reece have collaborated to create a joint record label and film/TV production venture — La Rosa Ent and The Greatest Entertainment.

The idea is to look after independent artists, but she will also release her own album, called She God, under the label. Her single Right Now is currently on iTunes, and she recently released her free album The Facelift on Soundcloud.

Shanell has an ever-growing following on social media, with 28.2,000 followers on her Twitter and another 52,000 on Instagram. Check her out.

First Family of Hip Hop airs Sundays at 9/8c on Bravo.
