Bethenny Frankel dropped a bomb on Twitter yesterday, revealing that she had consumed a soup that had fish in it. She explains that she fell unconscious for 15 minutes and was then rushed to the hospital, where she was both in the ER and in ICU for two days.

Frankel explains she couldn’t see, talk and she thought she was having a stroke. Her blood pressure had also dropped tremendously. She reveals that the doctors told her that if she had been brought to the hospital just 5 minutes later, she would have been dead.

But what is this rare fish allergy that Bethenny suffers from?

Bethenny has never provided a name for this rare allergy, but she does explain that it is a rare allergy that isn’t common. Even on Twitter, Bethenny explained that it is very unusual and confusing, so she keeps it to herself.

A fish allergy is uncommon compared to the shellfish allergy, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. It is an allergy to finned fish, such as salmon, tuna, and halibut.

People who have this kind of allergy may experience anaphylaxis, which is often associated with life-threatening reactions, such as those from insect stings, medications, nuts, and latex.

This kind of reaction appears quickly, impairs breathing and can send the body into shock. Hives, skin rashes, nausea, cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, and headaches are also common symptoms of this kind of allergy.

The American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology recommends that people with a fish allergy should avoid all fish altogether, including shellfish to avoid any reactions.  In severe cases, people can be treated with epinephrine, which is an adrenaline shot with Epipen or the like. That’s exactly what Bethenny tweeted yesterday.

Her fans reached out to her and even joked about her ex-husband slipping a fish into her coffee. Bethenny took it seriously, revealing that she’s making changes in her life. She explained that being close to death was a wakeup call.

While filming The Real Housewives of New York City earlier this year, Bethenny also suffered an allergic reaction to fish. The ladies were in South America and she accidentally had soup with fish. She explained that she felt her throat closing, and she spent a day in the bathroom, throwing up.

Just two days ago, Bethenny Frankel revealed that she had been working hardcore since Dennis Shields‘ passing in August. She had been working on launching Skinnygirl Jeans, doing relief work, and filming the newest season of The Real Housewives of New York City.

It’s possible that Bethenny’s scary incident will be shared on The Real Housewives of New York, as the ladies are currently filming the newest season of the show.

The Real Housewives of New York City returns in the spring of 2019 on Bravo.
