Open mic legend Ron Grant has died after a battle with lung cancer. Known for his unmistakable voice and huge stage presence, Grant was well known in the New York music scene and touched many lives.

On Sunday, a friend of Grant’s announced on Facebook that the beloved singer had passed. After fighting a battle with lung cancer, he succumbed to the disease, leaving behind many grief-stricken friends and family.

“***GONE TOO SOON*** After a valiant battle with lung cancer, it is with a heavy heart that I share the news of my friend Ron Grant’s passing,” Dedra Tate wrote.

“Ron was a truly anointed man of God, who touched the hearts, and united the souls of countless people through his beautiful voice. Please keep his family, friends and fans in prayer during this time of utter sorrow. I will share ‘Celebration of Life’ details when they become available.”

News of Ron Grant’s death stunned many of his fans, who have commented over and over that Sundays just won’t ever be the same again. It was on Sundays that he hosted Ron Grant and Friends at MIST Harlem, and previously The Village Underground.

Hundreds of other tributes have also been paid by friends and fans since learning of Ron Grant’s passing. He had a huge impact on those who knew him, and those around him, and will be sorely missed.
