Food-baby or baby-baby ?!😜🤰🏼 #10weekspregnant today! ✨💗💫 • Tomorrow is our first official ultrasound with my midwife. We cannot wait to see this little nugget and hear his/her heartbeat!👶🏼🙏🏻 • We went to a ultrasound place to get confirmation at 6 weeks pregnant bc I felt like I couldn’t wait any longer. Lol Everything looked great!🙌🏼🤰🏼 • I began bleeding (super mild – not too concerning) end of week 6 through 8 weeks. I had mild cramps, too. I’ve been eager to hear this kiddos heart beat and know all is well & it seemed like my doc appointment was so far away so I tried finding it on a Doppler for reassurance. • Now, I’m a labor and delivery nurse. I know it’s likely way too early to find the heartbeat on the Doppler…so when I couldn’t find the heartbeat the rational me was like “of course not. It’s ok!” But the irrational me was like “GO GET CHECKED OUT.” • I didn’t wanna be overly dramatic and call my midwife saying i couldn’t find the heartbeat…she’d be like, “yeah, no kidding!” So I went back to the ultrasound place for reassurance from the ultrasound tech. • We got there & she wasn’t able to pick up the heart beat or see the baby😢 • My only hope is that the reason she wasn’t able to find it is because she goes on the belly and at this early stage of pregnancy the baby is best found when the ultrasound is performed vaginally.🙏🏻 ….I’m hoping you guys could send out some positive vibes and prayers for us as we go into our ultrasound appointment with our midwife tomorrow…I’m not bleeding, not cramping so I feel like there is definitely hope.🙏🏻🤰🏼💗 • #pregnancyjourney #preggers #preggo #momlife #pregnancy #firsttrimester #10weeks #almost #secondtrimester #send #prayers #and #babydust #positivevibesonly #positivethoughts #thinkpositive #prayerrequest ✨🙏🏻💫

Sadly, the news simply confirmed what Jamie was hoping not to be the case, that there still was not a heartbeat detected and that while the amniotic sac continued to grow, the baby did not.

“So thankful for this little one and her daddy,” Jamie wrote on Instagram. “Our doc appointment didn’t go well today.”

So thankful for this little one and her daddy.🙏🏻 Our doc appointment didn’t go well today.😢 • I’m devastated. We’ve had a “failed miscarriage.” Our baby formed and there was an amniotic sac, but while the amniotic sac continued to grow the baby stopped at some point.😰 • We had three options. 1) Wait for my body to miscarry our baby naturally. 2) Go to the hospital and have a D&C. 3) Take medication to help my body miscarry quicker. • I really don’t want to have to go to the OR and have a D&C for obvious reasons. I’d love for my body to just naturally take the proper course, but since we don’t know how long that would take and since there’s a small risk for infection I opted to take the medicine and hope and pray it works so I don’t have to have a D&C.🙏🏻 • I can’t thank you all enough for all the love, support, prayers, and encouragement you’ve sent us. You have no idea how much that has helped both @doughehner & I. You guys are the most amazing community of women & men here on instagram & social media and I hope you know how much we appreciate you all.🙏🏻💗 We are so blessed to have such amazing Frans. We love you guys. ❤️ • Spending the rest of the day in bed thanking God from the for our rainbow baby, @henleygracehehner 👶🏼🌈 Feeling so blessed to have her to hold while my heart aches!🙏🏻 • • #pregnancy #journey #pregnancyloss #awareness #miscarriage #support #momlife #rainbowbaby #momsofinstagram #girlmom #mommyhood #moms #momproblems #pregnancylossawareness #miscarriagesupport #10weekspregnant #1in4 #yourenotalone #angelbaby

From there, Jamie explained what a failed miscarriage is and what choices she had to make after learning that she had miscarried again.

What is a failed miscarriage?

Also called a missed miscarriage or a silent miscarriage, this is when the fetus stops growing inside the womb but there are no outward signs of a miscarraige.

As Jamie revealed to her fans, she had some bleeding from weeks 6-8 and even had some mild cramping but in many pregnancies, this can be normal and doesn’t mean anything bad.

She waited until further in her pregnancy to check for the baby’s heartbeat because in many cases, no heartbeat can be detected for the first six to seven weeks anyway, depending on the actual date of conception.

Though she worried, as many pregnant women do, Jamie Otis even told her Instagram following that she was staying positive as she waited for the vaginal ultrasound to confirm what was going on. She expected to see a healthy baby with a strong heartbeat.

What happens after a failed miscarried?

When the fetus stops growing and developing but isn’t expelled naturally via miscarriage, it usually means the woman has a few options in order to help her body to expel the tissue and miscarry.

Jamie explained that she was given three options. “1) Wait for my body to miscarry our baby naturally. 2) Go to the hospital and have a D&C. 3) Take medication to help my body miscarry quicker.”

Wanting to avoid the invasiveness of a D&C, she opted to take medication to help move the process along.

Even in the midst of this personal tragedy, Jamie made sure to thank her fans for being so supportive. She also said she planned to stay in bed for the day while her heart heals.
