Based on the epic graphic novel by Frank Miller, 300 is a ferocious retelling of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing insurmountable odds, their valor and sacrifice inspire all of Greece to unite against their Persian enemy, drawing a line in the sand for democracy. The film brings Miller’s (Sin City) acclaimed graphic novel to life by combining live action with virtual backgrounds that capture his distinct vision of this ancient historic tale.

Just want to mention to any one who does not know, about all the press articles and videos etc: that can be found on GerardButler.net.Many reveiws are coming in every day from those that attended the Berlin film festival. Most all are very good. There is one or two negatives, but we just ignore them. There is also info that Gerard is to appear on Jay Leno 3-2, and Craig Ferguson 2-21. How acurate these are I have no Idea. One of them is on the TV Guide. Fun hunting!

This war had nothing to do with democracy. Sparta was not a democracy at the time. Nor were the majority of the greek city-states.

I wonder why Persians were depicted as demonic characters... Did Bush co-direct this movie?!

In this movie lots of things are fake and are not based on real historical events; however, even in the movie they fight for Sparta not for democracy.

This movie truly stands out above the typical mediocre fare. 300 is a GREAT movie. No social message -- just a straight-forward telling of the story. Excellent acting!

It is pathetic to learn history through the eye of Hollywood. This movie is full of lies and one-sided, unfounded glorification. It should be considered as the imagination of some twisted mind who tried to rewrite own version of history. Another waste of money like the 'Alexanter', save your money and wait for the DVD.

Your learning history through the eyes of a comic book adaption!

You seriously need to pick up a book if you have such a boner for history.

There are some historical inaccuracies in 300, albeit relatively minor ones, if you are using Herodotus' Histories as the record. Historians will also tell you that Herodotus was quite biased to his own Greeks, so the source material is slanted in some regard, as will be sources it inspired. However, this was a battle for democracy, or more to the point, the notion of self-rule. Granted the Spartans were not really democratic, but they neither were they a fascist govenment. They had Elders who were elected as representatives of the Spartan citizenry and much of their law was theistic. There were two kings, by design, installed by Lycurgus (their great lawgiver) to provide for checks and balances, but neither was as powerful as the Council of Ephors. So their goverment in some ways, was more reflective of our own US government than the 'pure' democracy of Athens. Now the Spartans had a large slave population (helots), but so did Athens and the other City-States. It wasn't until the American War Between the States (Civil War), the purported freedom was extended to everyone. But make no mistake about it, the alternative to Thermpylae was subjigation to an all-powerful tyrant. Had he succeded, there would have been no 'Golden Age of Athens', no Rise of Rome, no Brittish Empire, and no Everybody Loves Raymond reruns (or anything in-between for Western culture). Folks, this battle did preserve democracy, the belief in individualism and the notion that kneeling is a personal choice, not a requirement. Live free or die!

I thought it was a good movie not fully historically accurate but what movie is? I dont really see any parallels to the US war in iraq like some might i just see a guy doing a movie that was visually appealing and exciting and think its one of the best movies to come out this year

Saw the first one, but not this version yet. Looking forward to seeing it, as the filmogrophy is dark and brooding, suggestive of the gathering war clouds over a once again sinister Persia rising...

People are ridiculous for criticizing this movie in such a way, talking about historical innacuracies... of course its inaccurate, its a fictional film. It was an amazing movie, with breakthrough filming... Great acting and very intense battle scenes, people need to back up a little bit and watch the movie for what it is, and not get so emotionally involved...

I'd like to add to all those bickering over it's historical correctness and democracy standings that this movie it based on: FRANK MILLERS graphic novel '300' this is a comic to silver screen film. Not based on history or myth.

thank you for your time
and personally... I can't wait for this to hit our screens
here in the UK.

Filotimo

Of all the virtues, and one essential to Filotimo and most frequently extolled by the ancient philosopher is courage. In one of Plato's dialogues, Socrates says, 'If a man lacked most virtues but had unconditional courage, he will be saved.'

Anyone who thinks this movie is based on history is an idiot. It is based on a comic book written by a guy who wanted to write a fantasy story in a historical setting. Anyone who wants to learn real history will have to go out and get a non-picture book.

ITS A FILM!!!!!!!!! Is this film likely to promote anti Persian (Iranian) beliefs? I doubt it. Is it likely to inspire awe at the bravery, historical or not, of the Spartans as displayed in the film? Yes. Are most people who watch this film likely to feel 'inspired' by the film? Yes. Get over it, its a film, NOT a documentary.

A GREAT MOVIE!!! As a greek I will agree that the film has some historical inaccuracies of course, but let's not forget that this is hollywood and the film is based on a comic book. I have previously watched Troy and Alexander which were absolutely outrageous and ridiculous!!! I was also afraid to watch this one at first, but fortunately 300 has nothing to do with the other two craps.
Some have mentioned that spartans were not fighting for democracy but for sparta. Even so, spantans strongly believed in freedom and were fighting against slavery. But isn't that what democracy really means?
I think the movie has managed to capture the overall message of the battle of Thermopylae.
Great performances. Especially that of Gerard Batler as Leonidas, was outstanding!

Do you all realize that this was based on a graphic novel? No one said that it was historically accurate. Next are you going to question the accuracy of Spiderman? I mean really, can a man support his and someone else’s weight by holding on to that small web with only one hand? Doesn’t seem accurate to the laws of physics to me.

Er yeah this film is not accurate to what actually happened, but I wasn't there so I dont really care, its a good film. Blah Blah Blah not true to history, who cares can I just ask you people that spotted all the inaccuracies one question? Have you ever kissed a girl?...... Thought not. Do you really know what its like to have a hang over and I dont mean the one from staying up until 10pm on a school night. Its probably one of the best films i've ever seen so let it lie and enjoy it if not stay away from the cinema and keep off the internet. bye for now

To Drew Peacock,

What do kissing girls and getting hang-overs have to do with movie critiques? Did it ever occur to you that people who give movies critical reviews might actually have more education and critical-thinking skills than you? Apparently not, judging by your juvenile insults. The fact that this brainless, cliched, testosterone-packed action flick is the best movie you've ever seen is pitiful. Your immaturiy, arrogance and complete lack of grammar skills are also pathetic. Go back to grade school before you shoot your mouth so confidently.

I would just like to say that even though I called '300' brainless, cliched and testosterone-packed, I don't actually think the movie is horrible. It has its artistic qualities, too.

You wouldn't make for a good Spartan woman Allison.

Brainless? In your humble opinion, maybe. But I'll lay you odds it may lead to some of the more cranially-challenged to pick up a history book or two. And that would be the Battle of Thermopylae just in case you're interested.

Cliched? Most movies are... just like most critiques, including yours. Don't give up your day job.

Testosterone laden?! Absolutely. Those 300 Spartans were also, just as all soldiers should be. You see, Allison, testosterone is the evidence of having 'balls.' You know, the 'balls' to fight and sometimes die so that others will have the opportunity to think critically.

Puh-leez. If you want Shakespeare, go to a library. If you want to know what this flick is all about, go to an IMAX.

this movie was good but...

it was completely fake..

it was alexander who WANTED to kill Persia and anyway alexander never even made it to Persia he got blocked off by mountains ...

Persias borders are all basically mountains so how da fuck could he kill Persia? and they say he burned down the city of persia well ive heard persia has these things that easy catch fire and burn to ashes but if he did burn the city why are they still standing?

the western civilizations all make lies... they got destroyed by turkey once and said that they had killed them...

and this is one of those lies...

but it was a good movie i loved it..

I am curious to know if the people who comment that the movie isn't historically accurate know anything about Greek history? I doubt it highly. I'd like them to enlighten us with their knowledge. Maybe they know something more then learned historians do! Or they just need look smart.

Comparing this to modern day politics and have a gripe? Complaining about racism? What are YOU doing in your life TODAY to change the problems we have in the world NOW? Make a stand about what is happeing in the real world, where there are real people. Mouthing off about a movie that was about art and a bit of history and a lot of imagination is not being politicaly pr socially active, it's about laziness, ignorance and ego.
