The Doom Patrol is getting weirder in season 3.
Former Doctor Who and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Michelle Gomez will join the series for its third season as longtime Patrol foe, Madame Rogue, which promises to add more wild turns to an already fantastic series.
What is The Doom Patrol?
Debuting in 1963, the Doom Patrol is a bizarre group of misfits joined together to save the world from threats no other team can handle (or even know exist).
The comic plays on the Patrol being outsiders to the DCU, including killed off for a time.
They became famous when writer Grant Morrison transformed the book into a wild romp that would inspire DC’s Vertigo comic line.
The TV series debuted on the now-defunct DC Universe platform before moving to HBO Max.
The Patrol consists of eccentric scientist Niles Caulder (Timothy Dalton); Cliff Steele aka Robotman (Brendan Fraser), a race car driver whose body was ruined in a wreck and his brain placed in a robot body; Rita Farr (April Bowlby), an actress with the ability to transform her body shape; Larry Trainor (played by Matthew Zuk and voiced by Matt Bomer), whose bandaged body hides a “negative spirit”; Crazy Jane (Diane Guerrero), whose 64 personalities each has its own superpower; and Cyborg (Jovian Wade).
The series has featured strange adventures from time travel to alternate dimensions, crazy creatures, and more. The second season ended with the Patrol facing defeat at the hands of the demonic Candlemaker.
Who is Madame Rogue?
Madame Rouge is one of the Patrol’s oldest enemies in the comics.
At first merely a master of disguise, she gained the ability to manipulate her body to stretch herself and change her appearance. She would often work with the Brotherhood of Evil to face the Patrol.
Casting Michelle Gomez in the role appears an inspired choice.
The actress broke out on Doctor Who playing the conniving Missy, who turned out to be a new incarnation of the Doctor’s archenemy, the Master. She would reprise the role over two seasons.
Gomez then played Madame Satan on Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Her most recent credit is HBO Max’s The Flight Attendant.
Details are tight on precisely what role Madame Rogue will play in the series. While having her be a pure villain is likely, the show does enjoy twisting some roles around. In the comics, Rogue has bounced between pure evil and an unlikely ally of the Patrol.
The official release says that “Rogue comes on a very specific mission…if only she could remember it.”
Production for season 3 has just gotten underway, and Gomez’s addition indicates season 3 will take the Patrol on their wildest adventures yet.
