Chicago Med had a very dramatic episode on Wednesday night. Dr. Charles’ wife, Caroline, who is played by actress Paula Newsome, may not return to the show this winter.
It was hinted last week that Caroline Charles was not doing well when Daniel Charles went out for some drinks without his wife. He made an excuse for her, but his eyes told a different story.
At the beginning of the new episode titled I Can’t Imagine the Future on Wednesday night, Chicago Med viewers got to see the truth unfolding. Caroline was doing much, much worse in regard to her health.

Toward the end of the episode, Daniel puts together a party at their house, telling his closest friend, Sharon Goodwin, that this was a going-away party. It was a thinly veiled revelation that Caroline was dying.
It got even more emotional later in the episode, when their daughter, Robin, arrived at the party. Daniel pulled her aside to tell Robin that this would be the last time she got to see her mother. Caroline wanted Robin to remember her as she was on that night and not attend a trip that Caroline and Daniel would be taking.

The episode was packed with emotions, especially with how integrated Caroline has become with the show since her return to Daniel’s life. He has tried his hardest to breathe new life into their relationship and has succeeded in quite a few ways. Now, though, that time could be coming to an end.
Actress Paula Newsome has done a spectacular time playing Caroline Charles and it will be sad to see her leave the Chicago Med cast. She didn’t appear in the trailer for winter return of the show, suggesting that Newsome won’t be returning.
As for actor Oliver Platt, who has played Dr. Charles since the first season of the show, this story arc has been great for him. It has allowed Platt to really shine on the screen, but his character now has to deal with a lot when Chicago Med comes back in 2020.
Chicago Med airs Wednesday nights at 8/7c on NBC.
