Octavia Gahagans allowed cameras to journal her transformation on the premiere episode of My 600-lb Life for TLC.
Her story is one of courage and compassion, and her desire to change her life is so overwhelmingly positive that you cannot help but like this Kansas City lady.
She is now posting beautiful pictures of herself as she fights the urge to eat incorrectly and has Dr. Younan Nowzaradan’s words of encouragement and his guidance to keep her on the right track.
The kickoff of Season 7 of My 600-lb Life saw this 42-year-old from Missouri finally leave her apartment with the help of over 11 EMTs and ambulance personnel to get her on the road to Texas.
On the episode, Octavia is shown heading to the Lone Star State for her weight loss surgery after becoming immobile and clocking in at over 690 pounds.
Like so many My 600-lb subjects, Octavia’s weight gain was the by-product of an abusive home where violence was the norm.
She endured domestic abuse and sexual molestation and at 16 years old, her weight started to dramatically increase. She weighed 400 pounds as a teen. It was during these years she was also saddled with taking care of an ailing grandmother.
Then in her twenties, she hit the milestone of 500 pounds. Her mum died of a heart attack when Octavia was just 23 years old, and the lack of time for proper grieving led to her weight spiraling even more. This was made worse as she was relegated to be the caretaker for her 15-year-old sister Desiree.
But she did a great job as a surrogate mother. Her sister Desiree went on to college and prospered personally and professionally.
Octavia’s health and weight did not get better over time. Desiree was able to begin a life while Octavia languished and became more housebound from obesity.
Now, Octavia has checked in with the leading bariatric surgeon, Dr. Younan Nowzaradan, as her weight loss and new confidence are showing on her social media. She’s posting pretty pictures and seems to be quite confident she will reach her goals. Desiree is one of her biggest cheerleaders too.
In our clip above, Octavia’s embarrassment is evident at her predicament in the apartment in Missouri.
She says: “We just need to get the mattress in it and then I need to be carried to it so EMTs are coming to help me with that, but I’m a little nervous about it because it’s been a long time since I’ve been out of this apartment. I just hope there are no issues and it goes well.”
There’s happy news to report as Octavia has shed over 230 pounds and is doing well. Her recorded weight after the surgery was 456 lbs.
As for her current status today, Octavia has shared recent pictures on her public Facebook page.
Octavia’s social media posts are upbeat and funny and show she is committed to staying the course.
She even promoted her premiere episode on Facebook to friends and fans, saying: “Please tune in on Jan 2 at 7 pm to see my episode. I’m so nervous but excited at the same time. Please share this post. Thanks so much for all your support!”.
The TLC reality star is a social media gadfly and is totally pumped about her weight loss. She looks amazing in her new pictures.
We will be following her progress and wish her the best in her difficult but rewarding journey to health.
