The Perfect Suspect spotlights murder of Katrina Smith by her husband

This week The Perfect Suspect spotlights the disappearance and murder of Katrina Smith.

Machesney Park, Winnebago County, on October 22, 2012, and 30-year-old Katrina Smith went missing after going out to run some errands.

Her husband, Todd Smith, reported her missing on October 25 and her family and friends soon started a huge search for her. They found her car, purse and cell phone but there was no trace of Katrina.

A few days later some evidence emerges about Todd’ history, with a conviction for arson stemming from when he tried to burn down his family home with his parents and brother were inside.

However, the search continues and on November 9 Katrina’s body is found, with an autopsy revealing she died from blunt force trauma. The police begin a murder investigation but they have no suspects initially.

By November 21 police have enough evidence to arrest Todd and in December he pleads not guilty. His trial was held in 2017 and a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder, the now 49-year-old was sentenced to 59 years in prison.

The Perfect Suspect airs on Thursdays at 9:00 PM on Investigation Discovery.
