On Real Housewives of Potomac, Gizelle Bryant has been dealing with her breakup from Sherman Douglas.
There have been quite a few questions about why Gizelle and Sherman broke up, considering he was just introduced on the show this season. The bigger question that has been looming lately though was about a possible Sherman Douglas arrest.
It turns out that the former basketball star wasn’t actually arrested but he was called in for questioning once and the story is pretty interesting.
Back in 1991, Sherman Douglas was subpoenaed to appear before a federal grand jury to be questioned about a prison break from the Lorton Correctional Complex in Virginia, according to the Washington Post. He was questioned about Kelvin Ford and Andre Villogram, who escaped from the facility in July 1990.
Sherman’s attorney made it clear at the time that he wasn’t under arrest and he wasn’t even under suspicion of committing any crime. Instead, it turns out that he knew the sister of one of the escapees. Sherman’s relationship with Denise Ford is the reason why he was called in for questioning.
At the time, investigators were still trying to figure out how the two men escaped and whether prison guards played a role. They also were trying to figure out who may be harboring the two men, leading them to ask Sherman Douglas about it.
They were following up on a report claiming that Kelvin Ford was seen in a Nissan Pathfinder with Florida license plates. It was reported that a similar car was also spotted in Sherman’s driveway just days before agents showed up with a subpoena and searched his home. Sherman Douglas was playing for the Miami Heat at the time, which would explain why he was questioned about the possibility of having Kelvin Ford in his car.
Villogram, who was serving six to 18 years for armed robbery, was caught less than two weeks after the escape and returned to Lorton Correctional Complex. The search for Kelvin Ford took a little longer but ultimately, he was found in Largo, Florida. After receiving a tip, authorities were able to locate and arrest him in a motel. He was also returned to Lorton.
There’s not much more information out there about Sherman Douglas being questioned in the Lorton Correctional Complex escape. He went on to play 13 seasons in the NBA before hanging up his jersey in 2001.
