During last night’s episode of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, NeNe Leakes tried to get her husband to eat healthy, introducing a vegan diet to him. However, he said he would rather have the alkaline diet, something that his nutritionist agreed to help him with.

As fans know, Gregg Leakes was diagnosed with cancer and he’s trying to fight it with treatments and dietary changes.

According to Web MD, the alkaline diet can help you lose weight and can, in theory, fight health issues such as arthritis and cancer. The website explains that some foods that are normally consumed, such as meats, refined sugar, processed foods, wheat, and many other common ingredients, are bad for the body because they produce too much acid in the body.

The alkaline diet is meant to bring balance back. Like many other diets, you can consume fruits, vegetables, soybeans and tofu. You can also have nuts, seeds, and legumes. However, the diet is very strict on dairy products and eggs.

The alkaline diet also restricts your alcohol and caffeine intake. Web MD explains that this kind of diet requires a high level of effort, as you’ll really need to change your food consumption.

If you are considering trying an alkaline diet, foods such as beet greens, spinach, kale, and swiss chards are great sources of nutrition, while adding bananas, sweet potatoes, carrots, celery, kiwis, cauliflower and cherries to the mix can keep your meals exciting.

NeNe Leakes opened up about dietary changes back in July 2018, where she told Bravo that she was supporting his altered food intake by becoming a pescatarian, someone who has cut out meat but still consumes fish. At that time, she also revealed that they were also following alkaline diet guidelines.

The Real Housewives of Atlanta airs Sundays at 8/7c on Bravo.
