Investigation Discovery tonight starts a three-part investigation into one of the most controversial murder cases in US history — in Casey Anthony: An American Murder Mystery.
The documentary series looks in-depth at the fascinating case, promising the “untold story”, and features interviews with those right at the heart of the story.
It began on July 15, 2008, when Casey’s mom Cindy Anthony rang 911 in Orlando, Florida, to say her two-year-old granddaughter Caylee had been missing for a month.
Caylee’s remains were found in a wooded area near the family home in December that year.
Her mom Casey quickly became the focus of police investigations after Caylee’s disappearance and faced trial in 2011 on first-degree murder charges — but was found not-guilty by a jury, prompting public outrage.
Casey Anthony: An American Murder Mystery looks behind-the-scenes at the investigation into the case and how the trial unfolded.
It airs over three consecutive nights on Investigation Discovery.
Part One, called Little Girl Lost, looks at then 22-year-old Casey’s claim that Caylee had been taken by the nanny, before detectives found out the toddler had been missing for a month.
Part Two, called A Shallow Grave, focuses on the start of the 2011 trial as the defense put forward allegations of a shocking nature while the prosecution reveal their own theory of how Caylee died.
Part Three, called Ten Hours, Forty Minutes, sees the defence become the focus as the trial continues, before the not-guilty verdict prompts outrage across the US.
Casey Anthony: An American Murder Mystery airs over three nights on Investigation Discovery. Little Girl Lost airs tonight, Sunday April 9, at 9/8c. A Shallow Grave airs Monday April 10 at 10/9c and Ten Hours, Forty Minutes airs Tuesday April 11 at 10/9c.
