The last sports domino has seemingly fallen in the United States.
In the past 24 hours or so, the NBA, NHL, and MLB have all suspended play due to the coronavirus. Now the XFL has followed suit.
XFL 2020 season suspended
The XFL was one of the only professional leagues that had yet to make a decision on its season. After watching all the other leagues halt or postpone their seasons, they are now doing the same.
Just like the NBA and March Madness Tournament, the XFL was going back and forth on the idea of playing the games this weekend without fans in the seats.
Obviously, after more thought, the league decided to suspend the rest of the XFL 2020 regular season.
The official XFL Twitter page made the announcement on Thursday evening. They also indicated that “all players will be paid their base pay and benefits” for the season. XFL ticket holders will also receive refunds or get credits to attend games in the future.

XFL title game still possible?
The tweet statement indicated that XFL “will not be playing its regular-season games,” but what about the playoffs?
While the league has played just five weeks of a 10-week regular-season schedule, Pro Football Talk is indicating that they may “attempt to play at least the championship game in a few weeks,” according to their sources.
The postseason schedule was to take place in about one month from now on April 18-19, with the championship game to be held in Houston on April 26.
If the XFL does decide to have a title game in 2020 when all of the coronavirus issues get handled, which teams would play in the big game?
Houston is obviously the best team in the West.
At 5-0, and looking like they could possibly run the table on a perfect season, PJ Walker and the Roughnecks were dominating their opponents.
The problem comes from the East.
The DC Defenders, St. Louis BattleHawks, and New York Guardians all have a 3-2 record. The XFL would obviously have to use a tiebreaker rule or some sort of decision on which team would head to the title game.
Of note, DC holds wins over both New York and St. Louis during the shortened season. However, it’s only speculation that a tiebreaker would rely upon that to decide which team would represent the East in a championship game.
Right now, everyone just has a ton of questions, but no answers.
In a perfect world, this problem would resolve itself in a two-week time frame and a playoff round could take place before the title game.
Only time will tell, but hopefully, this coronavirus is on its way out.
The last thing the XFL needed was a short season. However, in the little time they played, it became clear that the product on the field is well worth watching. The XFL plans to be back next season, and you can bet the fans will be as well.
