WWE announced this past week on Monday Night Raw that the King of the Ring tournament was returning and would take place on television over the next month.
Rumor has it that the winner will be decided at the Clash of Champions PPV in September. WWE announced the next day who was wrestling in the tournament.
Now, WWE has officially announced the matches for the tournament’s first round. Here is a look at who is wrestling who and our picks for the tournament.
WWE King of the Ring Tournament matches
There are 16 wrestlers in WWE King of the Ring 2019, eight from Monday Night Raw and eight from SmackDown Live.
The right side of the bracket starts out with Cesaro vs. Samoa Joe. There is a lot of rumors indicating that Paul Heyman wants to push Cesaro, but Joe has been on a tear lately.
The pick is tough, but we have to go with Samoa Joe winning here.
The winner of that match battles the winner of another tough match — Ricochet vs. Drew McIntyre. Now, Ricochet used to be known on the indies as King Ricochet, so could that be a hint of things to come?
McIntrye can’t keep losing, but Ricochet as the plucky underdog in the tournament sounds fun, so we will go with Ricochet here.
Up next is Cedric Alexander vs. Sami Zayn. With Alexander’s recent push, it is easy to pick him in this match.
Finally, The Miz vs. Baron Corbin. While most vocal fans want nothing to do with Corbin, expect him to win here to keep him at the top of the heel side of the show.
On the other side of the brackets, the first match is Kevin Owens vs. Elias. There are two modes of thought here.
One is that Shane McMahon screws Kevin Owens to knock him out early and continue their feud. The other is that KO gets revenge on Elias. Expect Elias to win by cheating.
The winner of that battles the winner of Ali vs. Buddy Murphy. Before SmackDown Live this week, this was an easy pick for Ali. While we still think Ali wins, this will be an amazing match.
Up next is the battle between former tag team champions with Chad Gable vs. Shelton Benjamin. This match should be fun, but Gable needs to win here since he is the younger star.
Finally, Apollo Crews vs. Andrade. This is an easy pick for Andrade.
The crazy thing is that the left side of the bracket is main event loaded and the right side is lacking in that area with half of those wrestlers mid-carders.
The rest of the WWE King of the Ring tournament
If our picks for the first round are correct, we will go with Samoa Joe vs. Ricochet, with Ricochet pulling off the upset. The other match would see Cedric Alexander beating Baron Corbin as he continues his rise to the top.
Ricochet will then make it to the finals.
On the other side, Elias will battle Ali, with Ali pulling out the win. Then Andrade will beat Chad Gable.
Andrade will make it to the finals, setting up Andrade vs. Ricochet for WWE King of the Ring, with Ricochet winning and taking the title of King Ricochet back once again.
