John Cena has been the face of the WWE for almost two decades and is widely considered one of the best WWE wrestlers of all-time. However, in a recent interview, Cena said that his time is up.

Cena has been a part-time star for almost two years now. His Hollywood career has become the focus and professional wrestling has taken a back seat.

However, unlike Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who just left for Hollywood, Cena has kept a foot in the door and returns in between movies in order to wrestle for the WWE.

John Cena: ‘My time is up’

The interview was with Sports Illustrated and John Cena was talking about his current role within the WWE.

Cena had just returned for a few weeks, in which time he put over Becky Lynch as the biggest star on SmackDown Live and then put over Finn Balor as someone who could give Brock Lesnar a run for his money.

As for himself, Cena mocked his own theme song which has him singing “Your time is up, my time is now” when describing his place in the WWE.

“It’s a giant relay race, and I’m in the phase where I’m handing the stick off,” Cena explained. “My time is up. Someone else’s time is now.”

This is huge. No one has been at the top of the WWE as long as John Cena. Hulk Hogan was on top for as long but he moved from the WWE to WCW. Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock didn’t even last a full decade before leaving.

It will be interesting to see if John Cena is really finished as the main event star. Cena has won 16 world titles, matching Nature Boy Ric Flair’s record, and just needs one more world title win to have the most of all-time.

Who can replace John Cena as ‘The Man’?

Who can replace John Cena is not as easy as it sounds.

There are great professional wrestlers in the WWE. However, while Roman Reigns was the chosen one, he is out battling leukemia and might never be the same.

Seth Rollins is an exciting superstar, but he hasn’t shown he can carry the company. AJ Styles is over 40 and his career won’t last much longer. Names like Finn Balor and NXT stars like Adam Cole are possibilities.

However, right now there is no one that can lay claim to being the man who can carry the entire company on his shoulders for the next decade.

Maybe, the next Man is actually a woman as Becky Lynch seems to be the hottest thing going today in the WWE and is someone that John Cena himself endorsed.
