A second professional wrestling legend has passed away this week as Larry “The Axe” Hennig died today at the age of 82.
For those unfamiliar with Larry Hennig, he is the father of the late Mr. Perfect Curt Hennig and the grandfather of current WWE superstar Curtis Axel.
When Axel took on his name, Paul Heyman introduced it and said that it was to honor his dad Curt and his grandfather, The Axe.

While he only made a small appearance in the WWE, Hennig was a mainstay in the AWA and was one of that promotion’s top stars for years. He started competing in the AWA in the ’60s and was a tag team specialist in his time there.
While in the AWA, he won the AWA Midwest Tag Team Championship with Lars Anderson and was a four-time AWA World Tag Team Champion, three times with Harley Race and once with Duke Hoffman.
Hennig did go to the WWE at one point in his career and actually challenged Bruno Sammartino for the then WWF World Championship.
Larry Hennig retired from active competition in 1085, but before he retired he was able to win the NWA Pacific Northwest Tag Team Championship with his son Curt Hennig.
The National Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame inducted him into its halls in 2017 as part of his tag team with Harley Race.
Larry Hennig died on Dec. 6 with the official cause of renal failure. By the time of his death, Hennig had five children and 28 grandkids.
