The rumors swirling around Detroit Lions quarterback Matt Stafford are never-ending.
It ranges from Detroit shopping Stafford to anyone who has an interest, to Stafford himself being the one forcing the trade issue as he now wants out of Motown.
Thanks to social media, the rumors never quit.
General manager Bob Quinn says Stafford is their man and that they have no intention of parting ways with the former Georgia Bulldogs star.
However, with Stafford missing the entire second half of the 2019 season due to a back injury, it was apparent that the Lions need a bit of an upgrade at the backup quarterback slot.
Backup upgrade at QB coming?
Last season, the Lions signed Jeff Driskel and traded for David Blough to serve as Stafford’s backup.
Driskel played well filling in for Stafford after the Lions starting quarterback was put on the shelf for the remaining eight games of the season with a back injury.
Unfortunately for Driskel, he went down in late November with a leg/hamstring injury that forced David Blough into the starting role.
Blough did okay for not having any NFL experience to speak of. However, with 2020 on the horizon, the question is who will be on the Lions roster at the quarterback position besides Matt Stafford?
Jeff Driskel signed a one-year deal in Detroit and is now currently an unrestricted free agent.
David Blough is under contract for the next two seasons, so Detroit will most likely be bringing him back on board.
If the Lions don’t offer a deal to Driskel, they should be looking no further than the XFL to sign their next quarterback.
Jordan Ta’amu, PJ Walker NFL bound?
If you aren’t watching the XFL, you are missing out on some pretty darn good football.
The talent on many XFL teams runs pretty deep, especially at the quarterback position.
If you do watch the XFL, then you already know this — St. Louis’ Jordan Ta’amu and Houston’s PJ Walker are going to get NFL offers this summer — and the Lions should be interested in checking them out.
Ta’amu was a star in college at Ole Miss. Back in 2018, he threw for over 3,900 yards and 19 touchdowns in the tough SEC Conference.
He also runs the RPO to perfection.
When Driskel took over for Stafford the Lions showed more of the RPO (run-pass option) look than they ever have in the past decade.
A quarterback like Ta’amu could be a valuable asset for the Lions in 2020.
The same can be said for Houston’s PJ Walker.
Walker is tearing up the XFL and it comes as no surprise to his former teammate Andrew Luck.
Luck and Walker suited up together for the Indianapolis Colts two seasons ago.
When Walker was released by the Colts before the 2019 season, Luck reached out to his dad, XFL commissioner Oliver Luck, and told him he had to give Walker a chance to play — because he’s that good.
“Andrew had been pushing him to me,” Oliver said. “He said, ‘Dad, I’m telling you, this guy can play. He’s a good kid and a hard worker, and he’s hungry to play.’”
Both of these guys can play — and they would come on the cheap for Detroit compared to other possible free agents.
Adding either Walker or Ta’amu as the backup, along with Blough, would give Detroit a solid option in 2020.
