On Saturday night, an epic Ja Morant dunk on Anthony Davis almost happened, as the Memphis Grizzlies hosted the Los Angeles Lakers.

Although the slam didn’t actually happen, the highlight of what nearly happened still has fans realizing Ja’s ability to soar and achieve highlight plays.

Not only are fans recognizing, but one LeBron James also had strong words about the Grizzlies rookie after the game.

Ja Morant attempts big dunk on Davis

Potential Defensive Player of the Year, meet the potential Rookie of the Year. The Grizzlies took on the best in the West on Saturday in Memphis with Ja Morant showing why he’s the frontrunner for the NBA ROY Award.

He nearly put a huge exclamation point on what was already a big game for him and his team.

In the third quarter, the Grizzlies were holding a solid 19-point lead over the visiting Lakers. As he got the ball from a teammate, Morant wasn’t about to back off as he wanted to add something a bit extra to his first-year resume in the league.

The Memphis rookie drove down the lane and then took off. He kept going. Even with All-Star Anthony Davis standing in his way.

Morant tried to dunk it over, or through, the Lakers’ superstar, but it would end up not happening.

In addition, Morant was whistled for an offensive charging call on the play. However, that missed Ja Morant dunk has plenty of fans out there salivating over the possibilities. It’s not a matter of “will he dunk on someone like that” but when?

Morant previously attempted to posterize Cavs star Kevin Love. He missed that as well, but the misses still have fans excited.

Following the game, ESPN reported on Anthony Davis’ comments about Saturday night’s near posterization.

“I think he would probably try anyone that was there,” the Lakers star said. “He’s done that a couple times this year. So I’m just trying to get a body in front of him and make him run me over.”

LeBron has strong words about Morant post-game

Another missed dunk attempt and all, Ja Morant’s Grizzlies went on to achieve a 105-88 win over the best team in the Western Conference. Morant finished with 27 points, 14 assists, six boards, and a steal.

Since LeBron James is still considered the measuring stick in the league for players as far as their potential for greatness, he was asked about Morant after the Lakers’ loss.

“The kid is super special,” said James. “Like I said when we just played him in L.A., Memphis got a great one. They got a great one. So, the sky’s the limit for the kid.”

Morant already knows that LeBron is the best in the game, as he also gave compliments to the league’s reigning superstar.

“That’s big bro — the King,” Morant said after the win. “I mean, I feel like everybody knows who he is. Just somebody that I look up to, a great [role] model. He’s just one of a kind. I don’t think there can be another LeBron.”

As they say, “game recognized game.” As of right now, Morant’s on an early career trajectory that there may not be another Ja in the history of the NBA.

By the way, if the NBA Playoffs started today, the Lakers hold the top seed in the West and the Grizzlies hold the No. 8 seed. Based on last night’s results and the slew of potential highlights, that could be one entertaining series on the way.
