History’s original TV show Vikings will come to an end after Season 6, which was announced last year. The hit series is currently in its fifth season and will conclude at the end of the month.
Season 6 of Vikings will premiere later this year with 20 episodes in two parts. Therefore, fans still have a lot of Viking episodes to go through but that is not where the good news ends.
Deadline reports that Vikings showrunner and creator Michael Hirst will continue the Vikings franchise after the cancellation of the current long-running series. It is unclear what the follow-up series will be about or whether some cast members from Vikings will return.
The report states that the spin-off series is in early development and there are no further details about the project. Vikings is the History channel’s first scripted series and it has been running on the network since its premiere in 2013.
Michael Hirst created The Tudors and has reportedly worked on a drama about the Roman empire, so fans can expect the follow-up series to likely surround medieval or post-medieval events.
Vikings delivers strong ratings for the History channel with about 2 million weekly viewers — down from its fourth season, which marked the departure of Travis Fimmel, who played famous Norseman Ragnar Lothbrok.
Vikings airs on the History channel on Wednesdays at 9/8c.
