Great news for fans of History’s excellent drama “Vikings” which left us completely shellshocked at the end of last season, watching King Horik (Donal Logue) get served by a crafty Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) as he went all Godfather on him and pretty much dispatched his group and cleared the way to be king, with Lagertha (Kathryn Winnick) still an Earl and his wife still sort of at loggerheads over him in the love department.
Season Three will see Lothaire Bluteau, Kevin Durand and Morgane Polanski join the already announced Ben Robson in Kattegat.
Bluteau, who worked for “Vikings’ showrunner Michael Hirst in Showtime’s “The Tudors” is cast as Emperor Charles of France, a powerful man who views battling the Vikings as spiritual and earthly; Kevin Durand, who plays this awesome alpha male vermin control and rat catcher Vasiliy Fet for the city of New York in FX’s upcoming series “The Strain,” is cast as The Wanderer, a mysterious man who is not what he seems (just like in The Strain!) and Morgane Polanski is cast as Princess Gisla, the elegant, self-possessed daughter of Emperor Charles and his most trusted advisor. In real life she is the daughter of Roman Polanski and Emmanuelle Seigner and older sister of her brother, Elvis Polanski.
These actors join previously announced Ben Robson who will play Kalf, Lagertha’s trusted second in command.
The series centers on the real-life travails of Norse King Ragnar Lothbrok, who longs to find and conquer new lands across the seas and claim the spoils as his own. The series portrays life in the Dark Ages, a world ruled by raiders and explorers, through the eyes of Viking society.Travis Fimmel is cast as Ragnar, who plays the role with a detached air of wonder and prepossessed power. His spiritual match and true love is his first wife, Katheryn Winnick, cast as Lagertha, now an Earl and fierce shield maiden.
Clive Standen is his brother Rollo. Alexander Ludwig is his oldest child Bjorn. George Blagden is the English monk and former POW, Athelstan, who decided to stay among the Vikings. Jessalyn Gilsig is Siggy, a bitter former Earl’s wife now serving Ragnar’s family. Linus Roache is Ecbert, King of Wessex, a man of strength, knowledge and undisguised ambition. Gustaf Skarsgard as Floki, a ship builder who designs the new generation of Vikings ships and Alyssa Sutherland as Princess Aslaug, Ragnar’s new wife.
The series is created and written by Michael Hirst (Academy-Award winning film Elizabeth; and the Emmy® and Golden Globe® nominated series The Tudors).
