This is an especially tragic episode of TLC’s My 600-lb Life, as a woman has turned her five-year-old son into a maid, carer and adult before his time.
On this week’s all-new episode of My 600-LB Life (premiered Wednesday at 9/8c on TLC), we meet a real-life “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” mother, Ashley D, of Houston, Texas, weighing in at over 700-lbs at just 26 years old. It took her seven years to lose 364 pounds.
In the film What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Johnny Depp’s mother is also well over 500 pounds and she relies on her children (primarily Depp) to do everything.
With Ashley, she cannot do the simplest things and has her young child learning how to run a house before he goes to kindergarten.
Ashley is shown showering naked and the giant mass that is her stomach hangs nearly to her shins.
Understandably she is ashamed of her body and hides at home.
After bypass surgery, Ashley begins a journey to living a semi normal life and hopefully will get the skin surgery she needs desperately.
Weighing as much as she does, the clock is ticking on Ashley’s life. Almost any type of movement is painful due to her extreme weight.
She struggles to deal with many everyday activities and must rely on her 5-year-old son to complete chores that require much standing or walking.

Watch here as the shrinking Ashley – post-gastric bypass and awaiting her second skin removal operation – is given a hard time by her also obese mother who jokes she will puree turkey for her and then teases her about rolls and apple pie.
