The Curse of Oak Island fans travel virtually each week to the mysterious titular island in order to discover the latest treasures that brothers Rick and Marty Lagina and their team have unearthed.

But for those of you new to the show, where is the location of the actual island in real life? Here we go beyond the flat reality of the television screen to look at where the documentary reality show is filmed.

Oak Island is a a rugged landmass located off the coast of Canada’s Maritime Province, Nova Scotia.

While the Atlantic-facing province has about one million citizens spread over 21,300 square miles, Oak Island is a blip in the ocean in comparison.

One of over 350 small islands in Mahone Bay, Oak Island is a privately owned, 140 acre forested mass with only a handful of full-time residents.

The craggy island has been the subject of numerous treasure hunts during the last 220 years, with The Curse of Oak Island bringing the island’s infamous story to a worldwide audience.

The series is now in its sixth season and the treasure hunters have unearthed a string of amazing artifacts which mean they may be on the verge of rewriting history: an ancient lead cross, age-old coins, intriguing gemstones, and even human bones dating back centuries.

The island is connected to the mainland by a causeway, and if you’re thinking of hopping over for a quick look-see, tours are conducted from May through October via the Friends of Oak Island Society and Oak Island Tours, Inc.

If you do decide to visit the island, back on the mainland you’ll find the nearby towns of Mahone Bay, Chester, and Lunenburg, which are chock full of artisan shops and galleries, plus miles of picturesque beach to explore as well.
