Tonight, Real Time with Bill Maher continues the series’ 16th season on HBO — with guests including David Frum, Richard Haass and ‘The Mooch”.
Hopefully, this show will be a better one than last week’s awkward panel who went loggerheads with Bill over his agreement with President Trump’s edict that Jerusalem was in fact the correct capital of Israel.
That, and the going nowhere mid-show interview with Zooey Deschanel, were a huge disappointment. Maher’s had better shows and, hopefully, tonight’s juicier lineup will spark some interesting and intelligent conversation and debate.
Foreign policy expert Richard Haass is the top-of-show interview guest. Haass is a frequent guest who recently excoriated President Trump as “abdicating” the USA’s role in world politics on CNN, saying: “I don’t see this administration as isolationist…the reason I use the word ‘abdication’ is what they’ve done is unilaterally — it wasn’t forced on them — they chose to walk away from many of the institutions, frameworks, introduce questions into alliances that have really formed or informed American foreign policy now for nearly three quarters of a century.”
Meanwhile, the lightning bolt mid-show interview round goes to…the loquacious Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci. “The Mooch” is a frequently booked pundit on TV news shows defending his former boss, President Trump. In other recent news his much-publicized pending divorce was called off, and he made news buying a pricey shack in the Hamptons right next to liberal Democrat actor Alan Alda.
The roundtable guests are political strategist Donna Brazile and political commentator David Frum. Brazile is a vexing figure in the Democratic party who penned a book that blistered the Clintons. In a recent California Legislative Black Caucus speech she said: “With so many people running, we’re going to see a big, blue wave…and we’re excited about the historic levels of support that we’re receiving now from millennials and women voters.”
Frum is the delicious “get” for the show in our opinion. A frequent Real Timer, Frum is a subtle force of nature whose blazingly adroit assessments of the political landscape make him one to watch and listen to. Frum is a former speechwriter for President George W. Bush who has taken huge issue with what Trump has done to the GOP and the country, penning a bestseller — Trumpocracy: The Corruption of the American Republic.
Real Time with Bill Maher airs Friday at 10pm live ET/tape-delayed PT on HBO
