Showtime’s evocative ‘Penny Dreadful’ was a visual jaw-dropper that took literary moments and characters from Victorian England and blended them seamlessly into a new lurid tale of demonic possession, lust and deadly sins and omissions, underscored by soul-eating guilt that tore away at the lead actors Timothy Dalton, Reeve Carney, Eva Green, Josh Hartnett and Rory Kinnear.
Some of literature’s most terrifying fictional players like Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and Dracula are lurking in the darkest corners of Victorian London. This Showtime series wove them all in a frightening psychological thriller that blends the classic horror origin stories into a new adult drama.
No one was who or what they seemed. Especially one creepy fortune teller, a spiritualist Madame Kali, Helen McCrory, who has designs on Dalton if you remember her from season one. She has been upped to series regular along with Simon Russell Beale, who plays Egyptologist Ferdinand Lyle.
Showrunner John Logan’s Penny Dreadful spent 8 hours establishing the noir horror landscape and season two promises to see more of the supernatural element wreak havoc on the unsuspecting.
Penny Dreadful’s new threat will be a human antagonist, Helen McCrory, Madam Kali, who has a plan for Dalton’s character.
According to Deadline, LuPone “will play a mysterious character of great importance in the life of Vanessa” (Eva Green). LuPone’s recent TV credits include American Horror Story and in HBO’s Girls.
