Marty scopes out the bear-print he finds on this week’s Mountain Men

Mountain Men star Marty Meierotto comes across a giant bear print on this week’s episode of the History show — while hunting for goats on Alaska’s Kodiak Island.

Mountain goats are known for living in rough terrain but with a plentiful supply on Kodiak Island — after the animals’ population exploding in recent years — it’s known as a good place to hunt.

But to get there is no easy task, with trapper Marty being dropped off then making his way into their territory on foot. However, bears also frequent the same territory — and coming across one could lead to a dangerous encounter.

Marty hopes that he’ll be able to steer clear of them, but his fears are raised when he comes across the giant footprint which he estimates belongs to a brown bear measuring at least 9ft.

Brown bears usually measure anything from 4ft 7in to 9ft 2in, which takes into account their head and body.

Marty, who has a rifle for protection, says: “This is exactly what I didn’t want to happen.

But will he end up getting closer than he wants?

Mountain Men airs Thursdays at 9/8c on History.
