How to desalinate water on a desert island and boil water with hot stones
15th July 2016 6:16 PM ET
Josh James from Discovery’s Dual Survival explains how you can turn salt water into fresh using nothing but a couple of old plastic bottles.
He shows how you can desalinate water on a desert island simply by cutting the bottom off a couple of plastic bottles. One needs to be smaller than the other and you folder the bottom of the larger one over so it can catch drips.
The smaller bottle is filled with salt water and shoved inside the larger one. You then place them in the sun. The water will evaporate and then catch on the larger bottle. Once it cools down in the evening you just tap on the larger bottle and the water will collect in the fold.
James figures you get around 20 to 30ml per bottle per day, so if you have about 50 then you could create over a litre per day.

Salt Water to Fresh
This next clip from the show how you can boil water even if you don’t have a fireproof container to use. So you have fire but not pot or container to boil water in. Well you can still do it. If you grab a water tight bag os some sorts, line it with sticks, pour in the water and then simply put in some hot rocks. Leave it a while and you will have boiled some water, pretty cool.
