Hoffman crew member Dave Turin has yet to see paydirt, and this constant disappointment unhinges him — leaving him suffering a meltdown on the job.
Dave surveys a mound of soil at the Buckland claim and says: “I don’t like the way this looks, like, I think they’re too high, it doesn’t look like pay.”
He adds that the claim is “nothing like we thought” and, discouraged after failing to spot gold in the sluices, says: “I just hope they know what they’re setting up here.”
Dave then looks through pans and sees nothing. He says: “Are you serious? No gold here. What the frick are they sending here?”
He calls Todd Hoffman on the walkie talkie and says: “Todd, where’s this pay coming from? I just panned two pans I got absolutely no color in this…there ain’t no gold in this.”
He begins to lose it after talking to Todd, who tells him Andy found some gold and to “just freakin’ run it”.
Dave throws his walkie talkie into the dirt and says: “It’s just a bunch of crap, you can’t run a mine like this…there’s no way we’re gonna run it because I’m gonna run it off this cliff.”
He then loses his mind and starts to doze the paypile, which his crew had made with hopes that gold in the soil would turn their season around.
He says: “These guys are all working for gold. They need the gold, and this isn’t gonna get it so it’s just going to go away!”
But his rogue action immediately freaks everyone out, leaving Kevin in shock and Todd running in front of his bulldozer, yelling: “Whoa! Stop!”
What will happen to Dave? A little court-ordered R&R vacation or a boot from Todd Hoffman up his butt?
The rest of the episode description from Discovery leads us to believe this all may be a red herring as the “mega-packed episode” sees sub-title king Tony Beets earn the biggest gold haul in Gold Rush history, while Parker Schnabel battles to keep Sluicifer from shaking apart.
And…after seven weeks at the Buckland claim, Hoffman is apparently “finally on the gold”.
Maybe Dave’s behavior was just for dramatic flourish? We will have to see tonight!
Discovery’s Mega Week started on December 7 and runs until December 13.
