A few weeks ago it was announced that ABC was to remake the hit 1981 series The Greatest American Hero with a new female lead.
Earlier this week it was announced that Hannah Simone is the chosen one to don the tight red lycra costume and strut her stuff to the cheesy theme song.
For those who are not in the know, The Greatest American Hero was a superhero comedy devised by the late Stephen J. Cannell who would go on to create such shows as The A-Team and 21 Jump Street to name a few.
The original series starred William Katt as Ralph Hinkley, a clumsy high school teacher who gets picked up by a flying saucer and given a bright red suit by the aliens.
The only catch is Ralph loses the instruction manual and has to figure the suit’s abilities out as he goes. In the show, Ralph winds up working with FBI Agent Bill Maxwell (Robert Culp). The two would form an unlikely friendship as they fought crime and kept America safe.
The reboot will focus on an Indian American Meera who has a fondness for karaoke and tequila. Much like with Ralph Hinkley, coming into possession of the red suit will turn Meera’s life upside down as she tries to figure out how to use it.
ABC’s reboot of the show, which is a gender-flipped take on the classic series, got its initial pilot order last month. The original series, while only lasting for three seasons, is instantly memorable to anyone who watched it due to the cheesy theme song ‘Believe It Or Not’, which even earned a spot in the US charts.
This is not the first attempt at rebooting The Greatest American Hero with a female lead. Back in 1986 when the original series closed out, Ralph was tasked with finding his own replacement to wear the red suit and he chose a young woman by the name of Holly Hathaway to replace him, played by Mary Ellen Stewart.
Unfortunately the gender flip failed to take off, although it is fondly remembered by the fans.
Hero is just one of the many reboots and revivals in the works for next season, including new versions of Magnum P.I., Charmed and Murphy Brown.
As a fan that remembers the original, I’m hoping that this new version will be every bit as entertaining for the new generation of fans as the original was for me and millions of others.
It looks like the new role of Meera has come at the right time for Hannah Simone, who has recently wrapped up her work on New Girl as Fashion Model Cece.
