On this week’s Gold Rush, Todd Hoffman is having good days and mostly bad days at the High Bar Mine. The lack of quantifiable gold has created some real concerns still for him and his crew and the stress is evident.
In our exclusive new clip below, Todd Hoffman is still quite worried. He says: “We gotta get every ounce of paydirt we can. We gotta get this gold!”
The episode, titled Misery on the Mountain, sees Todd battling to get the 50oz of gold he needs to keep his High Bar mine open and his crew paid.
But Hoffman crew member Kevin Hiatt is downright distraught, as he frets about his family. He says: “My wife’s back home taking care of four kids while I’m trying to support them and I have another kid on the way, so I hope we can stay here.”
No time to stop and think about things as Hoffman radios Kevin to stay focused. “Keep this plant running hard,” says Todd.
Andy Spinks is also trying to keep up his spirits while he works but the reality of this futile search for gold is written all over his face. He says: “We’re at the point where it’s kind of a sink-or-swim type of deal. We’ve got to get gold.
Spinks is driving a big piece of equipment and reveals his strategy going forward. He says: “So, what we’re gonna do is get this top layer off and then I’m just gonna go down deeper.
“We have no idea if this goes 20 feet or a hundred feet or five feet. I mean, we just don’t know. So we’ll just keep going down to make it a bigger hole until we get gold.”
High Bar mine owner William Wirth is trying to put a good face on it all and keep the guys pumped up. He says: “The deeper you go the more gold you’re gonna see.”
As he watches Logan Pierce struggling with the clay topsoil he says: “He’s in some pretty tough stuff right now.”
Indeed, Logan and Kevin both have their issues with the mucky clay soil that is bearing no golden fruit.
Todd Hoffman says: “Logan, pick up the pace. We need to slam as much dirt through this plan as we can.”
Logan says: “Getting a full bucket here is next to impossible, this material is so dense. All kinds of weird clay, it’s a fight to load with this.”
Kevin is watching how the dirt is not really sifting out the way it should and says: “You gotta be kidding me.”
In his frustration, Kevin then calls Will, saying: “It just like, bogged way down and it’s taking forever for this stuff to run through!”
Will is trying to talk Kevin through the issue and says: “Kevin I’ve got that feeder turned all the way up so it’s at the max [that] it can go. And that feeder is packed in pretty tight.”
Will explains the hiccup in their dredging schedule to producers. But all the mansplaining about clay soil won’t make Todd feel any better.
He says: “At this rate, we’re never gonna get 50 ounces.”
Also on this week’s episode of Gold Rush that sees the Hoffman crew despairing, Tony brings all his children together to get his Paradise Hill claim up and running, while Parker Schnabel is furious at a series of costly human errors.
Gold Rush airs Fridays at 9/8c on Discovery.
