Gladys Ricart’s ex-boyfriend Agustin Garcia could not stand the fact she’d met someone else and decided to murder his former love on her wedding day, Primal Instinct investigates this case of deadly obsession.
Gladys Ricart, 39, and Agustin Garcia had been in a serious relationship for around six years, but when she called it off his love became obsession. Garcia began stalking his ex-girlfriend in a campaign that eventually led to him murdering her. She moved on after their relationship and found love after a chance meeting on a train, falling in love and deciding to take the plunge and get married about 9 months after she split with Garcia.
On September 26, 1999, Garcia grabbed his .38-caliber handgun and drove to Gladys’ home, where she was busy with her wedding. She had just given flowers to the bridesmaids when Garcia burst in and shot the bride-to-be three times, killing her in front of all the wedding guests.
In October 2001, at the trial, 49-year-old Garcia’s defense team never denied he shot Gladys three times, but they said that the shock of finding out that she was getting married caused a sudden mental illness, known as an acute adjustment disorder.
However, the jury was not convinced and his pleas for a manslaughter verdict were reject and Garcia was convicted of first-degree murder.
Gladys’ sister, Yolanda Ricart, told the press that she wanted Garcia in jail for the rest of his life, pointing out that: “we’re going to be suffering for the rest of our lives.”
In February, 2002, Garcia was sentenced to life in prison and will only be eligible for parole after 30 years, when he would be 79-year-old.
