This week Grave Secrets spotlights the murder of double amputee Hal Charboneau, whose killer is very close to home.
Portland, Oregon, May 1, 1992, and Charboneau was found dead in his own home, he’d been stabbed to death and his rare coin collection had been stolen. Initially the detectives working the case thought it was probably a burglary gone wrong.
About a month after the killing 20-year-old Grant Charboneau, who had been estranged from his father, moved into the house he had inherited following his dad’s murder. He usually lived with his mother but also hung around with local street kids and was the head of a street family.
Eventually police discovered that he had persuaded two members of his street family to kill his own father so he could get the house. Further investigation led to the exposure of a complicated web of betrayal and murder, with several other’s falling victim to Charboneau’s murderous plans.
Charboneau was initially sentenced to death in 1994 but this was overturned on appeal and he was given a life sentence, with no possibility of parole.
