Sad news for fansof Dicovery’s long running Bering sea docudrama. Deadliest Catch. Authorities say Tony Lara, who replaced the Cornelia Marie’s late Captain Phil Harris, died Saturday morning in Sturgis, South Dakota.
Lara, 50, died early Saturday morning at a private residence in Sturgis according to the Associated Press.
Lara was reportedly in Sturgis for the city’s famous motorcycle rally this weekend.
Discovery said of Lara: “There was no one out there more suited to take the helm of the Cornelia Marie than Tony Lara.”
The crabbing veteran ran his own freighting business., working on the boat for 10 years in the 1990’s and running the Cornelia Marie during salmon tendering. Lara was a good friend of the late Phil Harris, who died in 2010 a the age of 53.
Meade County Sheriff Ron Merwin told the AP that he’s waiting on autopsy results to help determine the cause of Lara’s death.
