Renée Zellweger: I took time out from Hollywood to become better actress

Renée Zellweger has told how she took time out from Hollywood to become a better actress.

The 47-year-old, who returns to the big screen this year in the much-anticipated Bridget Jones’s Baby, said she had to start saying no to roles so she could start experiencing life as a normal person.

She told British Vogue for their July cover story: “I found anonymity, so I could have exchanges with people on a human level and be seen and heard, not be defined by this image that precedes me when I walk into a room. You cannot be a good storyteller if you don’t have life experiences, and you can’t relate to people.”

It’s been 15 years since Renée first graced our screens in her role as the iconic 30-something singleton looking for love in 2001 hit Bridget Jones’s Diary, based on Helen Fielding’s novel of the same name.

And she revealed how reprising the role meant she once again had to put on weight to play the role — but she criticized the focus on Bridget’s weight.

She said: “I put on a few pounds. I also put on some breasts and a baby bump. Bridget is a perfectly normal weight and I’ve never understood why it matters so much.”

The July edition of UK Vogue is released on Thursday, July 9.
