They say art imitates life, which is why fans are investigating the lyrics to Miley Cyrus’ new song Slide Away to see if it has anything to do with her recent split from Liam Hemsworth or her apparent new love, Kaitlynn Carter.

Slide Away is a heartwrenching breakup ballad and that certainly doesn’t help the speculation that Miley’s newest song might be about Liam Hemsworth. After all, the last time they split, she released Wrecking Ball, which also was believed to be about her ex.

One thing is for sure; when Miley Cyrus is going through something, she puts out some of her best work.

“Once upon a time, it was paradise, once upon a time, I was paralyzed.” Miley begins in Slide Away. “I think I’m gonna miss these harbor lights, but it’s time to let it go.”

“Once upon a time it was made for us, woke up one day, and it turned to dust,” she sings. “Baby we were found but now we’re lost /so it’s time to let it go / I want my house in the hills, don’t want the whiskey and pills / I don’t give up easily / But I don’t think I’m down.”

“So why don’t ya slide away back to the ocean, I’ll go back to the city life,” Miley sings in the chorus. And while the rest of the song hints at breakups, it’s the chorus that seems to prove this song is about her split from Liam.

Some have suggested that this line is speaking of Liam Hemsworth’s hometown of Melbourne, Australia, which is literally on the ocean.

“Move on we’re not 17 / I’m not who I used to be / You say that everything changed / You’re right we’re grown now,” Miley continues in Slide Away. This is another clue that the song is about Liam since they met in June 2009 on the set of The Last Song. She was 17 years old at the time.
