MUTEK Montreal announces more artists, free outdoor shows, VR exhibit

Montreal’s huge MUTEK festival comes first week of June

MUTEK Montreal, which takes place June 1st through June 5th, has announced the final additions to the 17th edition of the technology and electronic music festival.

The five-day outing already boasts around 80 live performances from a veritable smorgasbord of forward-thinking, international electronic artists including Ash Koosha, Colleen, and Tim Hecker, now MUTEK has announced the addition of performances from Christian Carrière, DULL, Jeremy Gara (of Arcade Fire), OHM Hourani & DO MI, Paraphonique, and Herman Kolgen.

Just a month away, MUTEK has also announced the return of an outdoor stage component to the festival at the Parterre of the Quartier des spectacles. For the second year in a row, MUTEK lights up the green zone facing the eastern front of the Maison Symphonique with its EXPÉRIENCE series, which showcases a mix of local and international names.

From Thursday to Saturday, the performances in the park is all ages, open and free to the public, from 5PM until 11PM (from 3PM on Saturday), with a bar, food trucks and chill out furniture on site.

For all of you tech heads, MUTEK’s bringing back it’s VR Salon for a second year, a gallery, presentation and discussion on the future and application of virtual reality. The discussions and presentations at the VR Salon emphasize on the creative applications of VR in media, culture and entertainment.

Over 20 speakers, all of them established authorities on the subject, will elucidate their innovative projects in the arts, cinema, documentary, journalism, theatre and video games. Also, an exhibition of more than twenty immersive works and interactive experiences will be open to the public during the festival.

There will also be panel discussions, showrooms, and Q&A at the festival with big names in technology-based music. Both designers, artists, and enthusiasts will be providing didactic, thoughtful interviews and discussions in regards to the advancements and direction ahead of music and the technology that goes into making it.

Venerable music tech company Roland returns to MUTEK this year with an open to the public exhibit, Salon Electro.

On June 3rd, the Salon Electro will feature Roland’s line of AIRA modules, the much acclaimed TR-8 drum machine as well as the new System 500 modular synth, the afternoon culminates in a live demonstration/performance by Berlin-based Canadian techno master Matthew Johnson.
