Black Marble has shared the first single Iron Lung off of his forthcoming album It’s Immaterial — and it is the dreamiest thing you’ll hear this week.
LA-based artist Chad Stewart’s synth-wave project returns with the brand new full-length, out September 30 via Ghostly International, following his much lauded debut album A Different Arrangement.
Now with It’s Immaterial, his debut on the venerable Ghostly imprint, we see Stewart channel a duality of wistful reflection and a longing to move forward, yet all while being suspended in the moment.
Stewart, who recently made the move out west from the east coast preceding the genesis of this album, suffuses a maelstrom of feelings and musings on his mesmerizing, synth-driven instrumentals.
His music, which he writes, performs, mixes and records himself, harkens to synth music of the late 70s and early 80s and takes it into wondrous new territory.
The first taste of the new record is stunning – Iron Lung is a minimal, propulsive tune with a commanding bassline leading the way and Stewart’s subdued, ethereal vocals punctuating the surreal groove.
This track dances on the line between post-punk and new wave with amazing results, somehow both soaring and introverted, like a pensive drive home through the wee hours of morning was encapsulated for this song.
In this new chapter for Black Marble, we see him distancing from the material on his first two releases (A Different Arrangement and the Weight Against the Door EP), but as it is apparent with this new single, the paradigm shift he has made here is nothing short of promising.
