What is Netflix’s upcoming Velvet Buzzsaw movie about? Even after watching the movie’s trailer, you still won’t be sure, but it’s not going to be pleasant, that is one thing we are sure about.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo reunite and star in Dan Gilroy’s art house thriller that is set to make an appearance at this year’s  Sundance Film Festival on January 27 and then be featured on Netflix and a few select theaters beginning on February 1, 2019.

Not all art is pretty, but the art that is featured in the contemporary art world scene in Los Angeles is just plain nightmarish in the Nightcrawler director’s thriller.

Netflix describes the film to set somewhere between “where big money artists and mega-collectors pay a high price when art collides with commerce.”

The bizarre titled film begins when a grouping of unique paintings have been found at a dead hermit’s apartment.

Local art gallery owner Morf Vandewalt (Gyllenhaal) and his assistant Rhodora Haze (Rene Russo) are first surprised by how realistic the paintings look and can almost swear that is you look at them long enough, they move.

They put them up on display for the public to view but those who actually want to purchase them should really look away. It’s a case of not wanting to get wrapped up in your artwork.

In a 2017 interview with Business Insider, Gilroy stated that the film’s “got a Robert Altman-like large ensemble cast. It’s got a The Player vibe to it. There’s a large cast and we’re moving around from person to person as we move through this world. The story is being told through these different characters.”

The Player came out in 1992 and the Oscar-nominated film presented a satirical peek inside the Hollywood studio system. Velvet Buzzsaw aims to do the same within the world of fine art.

He also said that the film will be as dark as his previous film Nightcrawler but not a drama. At the time of the interview, the movie was slated to be released during Halloween 2018, but was pushed off until February instead.

The Netflix movie also stars Toni Collette, Zawe Ashton, Tom Sturridge, Natalia Dyer, Daveed Diggs, Billy Magnussen, John Malkovich, Peter Gadiot and Mark Steger.
