What an unfortunate time it is to be director Tom Hooper.

Despite working on a solid opening for the HBO series His Dark Materials, the acclaimed director who brought us timeless works like The King’s Speech and Les Miserables (2012) returned with a theatrical version of Cats — and, well, it was timeless in a different way.

Even worse, the film has earned Razzies including a Worst Picture nomination.

And after all this negative buzz, somehow the film is the talk of social media and today it’s for the most hilarious reason.

The reason for this is because a cut of the film may exist involving buttholes — yes, buttholes.

Interested? We are too! Let’s unpack this news, shall we?

Why do fans want a ‘butthole cut’ of Cats?

This amazing story began on Twitter with a user named @JackWaz making a claim that a friend of his was hired to make some changes to the film.

These changes involved digitally removing all buttholes from the cat characters in the movie — thus sparking a movement on Twitter with the hashtag #ReleaseTheButtholeCut. And the reactions are truly glorious.

Here is the original tweet from Jack Waz below:

Whether true or false, this story is bringing a ray of light in such a dark period for the country. So, hopefully, director Tom Hooper will let us have this moment while it lasts.

Twitter reacts with #ReleaseTheButtholeCut of Cats

As stated, the hashtag sparked a hilarious explosion on Twitter with celebrities, journalists, and cinephiles of all walks of life joyously chanting for a butthole cut of Cats. People like Rian Johnson (The Last Jedi) Seth Rogen, and so many more chimed in on this discussion. And during such a tough time — it might be the greatest thing the world has needed.

Here are some of those responses:

Unfortunately, the story has been debunked as of now. As seen in one of the tweets above, an e-mail was sent to writer/director Ben Mekler from a VFX worker on Cats and they had this to say on the butthole cut:

“There were never shots of cats with butt holes. Or at least by design. None that I saw anyway. However, there were a dozen or so shot where the skin and fur sim was groomed or just folded in a way that really REALLY looked like very furry lady genitals and buttholes by accident.

The task (as typical with heavy cg shows) fell on 2D to paint out the offending articles where it was brought up and spotted. Daily reviews were constant awkward discussions of people plucking up the courage to point things like this out: ‘does that [look] like a fanny to you?'”

Here is the original tweet from Ben Mekler himself:

So, there you have it! There is not a butthole cut of Cats, but possibly a cut involving “lady parts?” Either way, this is the wildest story to break during the period of social distancing.

Cats is available on all Video-on-Demand platforms.
