In March 2015, a twisted nurse was found guilty of sexually grooming and planning to eat a 14-year-old girl.
Dale Bolinger, 58, from Kent, England, told the Mexican girl, called Eva, in an online chat: “The idea of us making love and then eating you is a VERY great turn on!
“I have been called a very generous lover and I would be very generous to you before I prepped you for the table.”
He bought an axe before arranging to meet her at a station but she never turned up. Here we look at ten real-life cannibals who have hit the headlines in the past.
1 Issei Sagawa
Sagawa murdered and then ate a Dutch woman called Renée Hartevelt in Paris, France, in 1981.
She was a university classmate of his at the Sorbonne, when he invited her around for dinner.
He then shot her in the neck, had sex with her dead body, and immediately started trying to eat her.
After failing to bite into her buttocks he went out and bought a butcher’s knife.
He then ate parts of her for the next two days, describing her as tasting like raw tuna.
He was held without trial for two years before being found insane and unable to stand trial.
He was then extradited to Japan but freed shortly after.
He now lives in Tokyo and is a minor celebrity thanks to a fascination with crime.
2 Katherine Knight
Knight murdered her partner John Price in Aberdeen, Australia, in October 2001 — then hung him on a meat hook, skinned him, and cooked him in a stew.
Price’s head was found in a pot along with potatoes, cabbage, squash, pumpkin, courgette and gravy.
Knight also served up two plates of the dish on her table beside makeshift place cards with the names of Price’s kids, as if she was going to serve him to them.
Knight, the daughter of an abattoir worker, pleaded guilty to murder after stabbing Price 37 times and was sentenced to life in prison with no option for parole.
She is currently in Silverwater Women’s Correctional Centre near Sydney, Australia.
3 Vince Weiguang Li
Li was travelling on a Greyhound bus in Canada when he stabbed and beheaded fellow passenger Tim McLean — then started eating his flesh.
The incident took place around 19 miles from Portage la Prairie, Manitoba on the Trans Canada Highway.
McLean was asleep when Li produced a knife and began stabbing him repeatedly, before chopping off his head and running around showing it to other passengers.
After they and the driver were chased off the bus Li then returned to McLean’s body and started chopping it up and eating it.
He was put on trial in March 2009 but was found not to be criminally responsible for the killing. He has been in the high-security Selkirk Mental Health Centre ever since.
4 Jeffrey Dahmer
Dahmer is one of the most famous serial killers in history — known as the Milwaukee Cannibal thanks to his predilection for eating his victims. He also had sex with dead bodies.
Dahmer, from Wisconsin, raped, murdered and dismemebered 17 men and boys over the course of 13 years between 1978 and 1991.
He would sometimes keep their body parts as souvenirs — and often ate some of their remains. He was handed 15 life sentences in February 1992.
Two-and-a-half years later he was beaten to death by a fellow inmate at the Columbia Correctional Institution where he was jailed.
5 Armin Meiwes
Meiwes killed and ate Bernd Jürgen Armando Brandes after Brandes VOLUNTEERED to be the monster’s victim.
Meiwes had posted an advert on website The Cannibal Cafe saying he was “looking for a well-built 18- to 30-year-old to be slaughtered and then consumed”.
Many other people responded to the advert but backed out at the last minute, but Brandes went through with it.
The pair first cut off Brandes’ penis before both of them tried to eat it before Meiwest stabbed him to death and hung his body on a meat hook before eating him over the subsequent 10 months.
6 Albert Fish
Serial killer Fish was also a child rapist, and was obsessed with cannibalism. He confessed to three murders and was suspected of many more.
He was executed by electric chair aged 65 in 1936 after being put on trial for kidnapping and murdering Grace Budd.
In a letter to the family he claimed to have choked her then cut her up and eaten her over the course of nine days.
7 Alferd Packer
Packer, a gold prospector, claimed to have killed and eaten five others while on an expedition in the mountains of Colorado.
He said he had killed them all in self-defence and had to consume them to survive. In April 1885 he was convicted of murder and sentenced to death after signing two confessions.
However, the verdict was overturned and after a retrial in June 1886 he was sentenced to 40 years in prison for manslaughter, then the longest sentence in US history.
He was paroled 14 years later and worked as a guard until his death. It’s claimed he became a vegetarian in the final years of his life.
8 Rudy Eugene
Eugene beat homeless man Ronald Poppo unconscious then bit off the top half of his face including his left eye.
The attack in Miami in May 2012 hit headlines around the world leading to Eugene being dubbed the Causeway Cannibal.
The whole attack was filmed on CCTV and lasted for 18 minutes before police arrived and an officer shot him five times.
Poppo survived the attack but was left blind and disfigured.
Eugene, a 31-year-old former high school football player, is thought to have been high on drugs at the time but the motive for his attack remains a mystery.
9 Yoo Young-chul
Serial killer Yoo admitted murdering 20 people, mainly prostitutes and wealthy old men in Seoul, South Korea.
He also confessed to being a cannibal, eating the raw livers of some of his victims.
He burned three of his victims and mutilated at least 11 — carrying out all his attacks in the ten months between September 2003 and July 2004.
He was sentenced to death by South Korea’s supreme court in 2005 but is still being held in prison as the death penalty has not been carried out in the country since 1997.
The 2008 film The Chaser was based on his killings.
10 Klara Mauerova
Klara Mauerova and other members of her family skinned and ate her 8-year-old son raw in 2008.
The family were said to be members of a cult called the Grail Movement — and kept the boy, called Ondrej, locked in a cellar before the horrific incident took place.
A court heard they tortured him along with his ten-year-old brother Jakub.
Six people were convicted for the crimes after a neighbour bizarrely picked up images of the abuse on a baby monitor that was the same make as one the Mauerovas had installed in the cellar to watch the boys.
