10 best shows on Netflix

Sherlock, one of the best shows on Netflix
We check out some of the best shows to watch on Netflix from drama to horror

Netflix changed the online streaming market in 2007, when the company began offering advertisement-free streaming for a low price each month.

Unlike other competitors, you will never have your favorite content paused in order to show a few ads. This leading streaming site is now a large part of our culture. “Netflix and Chill” has become a popular saying among the Tinder generation, and you can also find the service referenced in music, TV shows and more.

This list compiles ten shows of varying genres that you need to add to your watch list immediately.

1 Stranger Things

Stranger Things
Stranger Things is set in the 80s and blends nostalgia with horror and suspense

Stranger Things takes place in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana during the 1980’s. Twelve-year-old Will Byers disappears one night and as a result, his mother, brother, and police department begin their own searches for him.

Dustin, Lucas and Mike, Will’s friends, find a telepathic girl at the same place that Will went missing. She is not looking to be found.

This show is only eight episodes, but has already amassed a large fan base of dedicated viewers. You’ve probably been told to watch this show already.

So, go watch it!

2 Sherlock

Sherlock
Sherlock is slick and smart, and even has an episode set back in the same period as the original stories

Sherlock is a BBC production, focusing on a modern Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson as they solve unusual crimes with Scotland Yard.

Well, sort of. Sherlock is basically a high-functioning sociopath, and Dr. Watson is a bit of an adrenaline junkie.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman play the roles respectively, and each put on an incredible performance.

Each episode is ninety minutes and feels similar to a short film.

If you are a fan of the classic tale, then you do not want to miss this spectacular version!

3 Pokémon

Pokémon
Pokémon has seen a resurgence in popularity due to the Pokemon Go! app

The Pokémon revival tour started in July 2016 when the popular app Pokémon Go was released.

Netflix offers the first fifty-two episodes of the first season of Pokémon: Indigo League—the original show.

Ash seems to win more battles by being a good person than being an excellent trainer, and Misty’s voice is sharp enough to break glass, but the nostalgia it brings makes it fun and laughable.

Bonus: Almost every other line is a pun. Brace yourself.

Oh and check out our list of the best Pokémon episodes ever.

4 Bob Ross: Beauty is Everywhere

Bob Ross: Beauty is Everywhere
Bob Ross: Beauty is Everywhere will have you reaching for a brush

After having a long day, nothing is quite as relaxing as kicking back and watching Bob Ross paint.

From 1983 until 1994, Bob Ross recorded over one hundred and thirty instructional painting episodes. Each one consists of beautiful landscapes—varying from sparkling beaches and flowing rivers, to rugged mountains and shining lakes.

Bob teaches each painting with ease, making any viewer wish they had their own easel to follow along.

Fear not! The Bob Ross Official Site sells package deals so you can make this dream come true.

Trust me, it will be tempting after only a few episodes.

5 Lie to Me

Lie to Me
Lie to Me is a unique take on this genre and will have you analysing all your friends when you chat

Originally a FOX production, Lie to Me is a television crime drama about a deception expert named Dr. Cal Lightwood, played by Tim Roth.

Cal owns his own business known as the Lightwood Group, a consulting firm that helps law enforcement and the government detect deception in all forms.

By reading body language, facial expressions and other minuscule details, Dr. Lightwood can uncover the true emotions of anyone he examines, which helps him find the criminals.

You don’t want to miss this unique take on a popular genre!

6 The West Wing

The West Wing
The West Wing bring political weight and humor

The West Wing follows the presidential staff under the fictional President Josiah “Jed” Bartlett. Daily issues can scale from a misspoken phrase during a press briefing, to a captured solider in hostile territory.

This star-studded cast will keep you laughing, and you will find yourself quickly absorbed into their family. Not convinced?

Over the span of seven seasons, the West Wing has won twenty-seven Emmys and was voted No.7 TV drama of all time by TV Guide.

If you’re looking for a smart TV show with real life issues, check it out!

Bonus: Rob Lowe.

7 Saved by the Bell

Saved by the Bell
Saved by the Bell is bright and breezy

If you are looking for a show that is perfect for binge watching, look no further!

This fun TV show was created in the nineties, and takes place at Bayside High. The mischievous Zack Morris, famous for breaking the fourth wall during episodes and addressing the audience, is the leader of the group of friends.

Watching Zack and gang navigate the social and academic difficulties that high school has to offer is both endearing and entertaining.

This should be a staple show for lovers of all TV genres.

8 Merlin

Merlin
Merlin is a slightly different take on the tale and child friendly

Merlin is another classic retelling done by the BBC, centering on young Merlin as he arrives at Camelot and begins to study magic.

However, Merlin must work to keep this a secret, as magic is forbidden in the kingdom. This version differs from other versions—Merlin and King Arthur are young contemporaries who are working toward cultivating the powerful kingdom of Camelot.

If you are a fan of fantasy TV shows, this deeply loved series is one you do not want to leave off your list. We didn’t.

9 Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp

Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp
Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp is a spin-off from the movie

Based on the hilarious comedy from 2001, Wet Hot American Summer is the eight-episode prequel to the movie.

Featuring much of the same cast, this story gives an entertaining and questioning backstory to the plot of the first movie.

While the fourteen-year gap in between the movie and TV show may reveal some physical differences amongst the actors, the comedy does not change.

If you are looking for hilariously awkward TV shows filled with your favorite actors, you should watch this show!

10 The Seven Deadly Sins

The Seven Deadly Sins
The Seven Deadly Sins is one of the only anime-style series Netflix bank rolls

The Seven Deadly Sins is a Netflix original, and one of the few anime-style shows that Netflix is currently producing.

The series centers on a girl named Elizabeth, a princess who is trying to reunite the “Seven Deadly Sins”—a team of elite warriors who are wanted by the state for killing dozens of Holy Knights ten years ago. Not hooked yet?

There are plenty of wacky personalities, talking animals and badass fighting scenes to attract fans of all anime shows.

Once you get past the added fan service, it is an incredible show worth checking out.
