Monsters and Critics is heading to the Comic-Con for foodies, the annual Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, CA. March 5 – 7, 2015! We’ve already had a jump start trying many products that will be exhibiting there and have discovered some incredible new entries in the vegetarian and non-veg categories that will be at a grocery near you soon… if not already.
Always one of our favorite destinations, the Natural Products Expo West is the largest tradeshow in the natural, organic and healthy products industry. The majority of items are made in the USA by smaller companies who have worked hard to make a mark in a very competitive field. If you love healthy snacks, this is Valhalla.
As we do annually, we got a jump start on the Expo and have been eating our way through some exceptional new food items, and highly recommend the following fantastic finds for anyone attending this event to look for:
Counting Sheep Coffee – Booth #7211
This surprising Canadian newcomer is a coffee you can safely drink before bedtime, as it promotes natural restful sleep with no complications or grogginess the next day. North American Grocery chains are catching on to this Bed, Bath & Beyond bestseller and snapping it up. We loved the Lights Out (strongest version) and if you are an insomniac, get some of this tasty Valerian root enhanced Swiss water decaf and have a cup of Joe to knock you out! Deland Jessop – the creator – will be on hand to answer questions and sample the product.
ADF Foods/Mediterranean Bites – Booth #2493
Nate’s Meatless Meatballs and Mediterranean Bites rock, end of story. Founded in 1932, ADF Foods is a renowned ethnic food processing company that creates pickles, chutneys, spices, and canned and frozen dishes. ADF Foods’ brands PJ’s Organics and Nate’s are available in retail outlets such as Whole Foods Market, Natural Independent Markets, Coops, Ralphs, Sprouts, Raley’s, and Kroger.
Funley’s Delicious – Booth #4468
Love the product, but the packaging is designed for children. Sweets that are made with wholesome ingredients-look no further than Los Angeles-based Funley’s Delicious® (est. in 2008) that was created out of a passion for food and fun. After working in the entertainment industry for years, entrepreneurs Shawn and Ashley Mendel took their family-favorite recipe Stix in the Mud® and launched Funley’s Delicious.
The Funley’s Delicious gang, Moe, Millie and their mischievous dog Lucy, cook up all-natural, wholesome products “entertaining mouths and minds everywhere™.” Their Stix in the Mud line is addictive and smartly packaged in individual wrappers (the peanut butter ones are lethally delish) and the tantalizing Super Crackers® and Wholly Granolly® Clusters are welcome additions Fit & Funley’s® Healthy Family Movement. Great product, fantastic healthy goodies to have on hand to snack. We love the whole line!
Walkers Shortbread Showcases Gluten Free Line – Booth #3952
The bakers of “The World’s Finest Shortbread” exhibit gluten free cookies in three varieties, and with all three loaded with real grass-fed butter, you can guarantee they taste amazing. Calorific but quality, and for the gluten intolerant, here’s your new tea time or coffee break pal. Walkers Shortbread, the Scottish purveyors of traditional shortbread since 1898, are rolling out this first-ever Gluten Free Shortbread, providing an authentic shortbread for those who are gluten intolerant, or choose a gluten-free diet. With less than 20 parts per million of gluten, Walkers Gluten Free Shortbread meets the FDA standard for gluten free food, with every batch tested to ensure compliance before its release. The new line evolved from years of development to produce a pure buttery taste that founder Joseph Walker would have proudly served at his Scottish Highland village bakery. It’s incredibly tender and melt in your mouth fabulous.
The new gluten-free line includes three shortbreads:
- Gluten Free Pure Butter Shortbread: The classic pure butter gluten free shortbread offers a crumbly “melt-in-your-mouth” texture and all butter taste.
- Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Shortbread: A generous helping of chocolate chips provides a rich and luxurious complement to this classic shortbread.
- Gluten Free Ginger & Lemon Shortbread: This crumbly shortbread combines the best of traditional Scottish baking with the exotic tang of Lemon and Stem Ginger.
barkTHINS – Booth #894
My biggest OMG moment came from eating this new item. If you love chocolate, find this fast. Founded in 2013 by Scott Semel, barkTHINS® snacking chocolate is fair trade quality dark chocolate made light and thin with a variety of flavors and taste in every bag. The brand created the snacking chocolate category by blending indulgent slivers of irresistible dark chocolate with America’s favorite snacking ingredients (nuts, seeds, pretzels + more) and hints of sea salt, delivering this unbelievably tasty snack in a breakable format found in re-sealable packaging, perfect for anytime indulgences. Exceptionally good product and chocoholics will adore it.
Non-GMO Project Verified, Fair Trade Ingredient™ Certified and contain no artificial colors or flavors. They are available in six seriously tasty flavors, as well as a seasonal variety: Dark Chocolate Almond, Dark Chocolate Pretzel, Dark Chocolate Mint, Dark Chocolate Toasted Coconut Almond, Dark Chocolate Blueberry Quinoa with Agave, Dark Chocolate Pumpkin Seed, Limited Edition Dark Chocolate Peppermint Pretzel (Seasonal)

Cabo Chips – Booth #5674
Mango Chili Lime Cabo Chips are the winner here for best all around chip product! Everyone in our offices loved them. These are chips done right. The healthy snack brand was inspired by the Bunte family’s love of Cabo San Lucas, where they spent many surf vacations in the once-sleepy beach city south of the border. The family-run business began as a healthy, gourmet tortilla chip company, and the elegantly light, crispy, savory product is still sold by leading Cabo San Lucas retailers today as a player in the region’s growing food-boom.
After experimenting with various recipes, Bunte settled on five simple ingredients to create the company’s signature “Original” chip, which is deliciously enhanced with Soy Sauce and real lime juice. The recipe uses stone-ground corn tortillas that are batch-cooked in Rice-bran oil to give them an authentic crunch, a bubbly texture, and less grease than most mass-produced tortilla chips. The cantina-style, health conscious chips are head and shoulders better than Mission, Santitas or other mass produced chips out there.
All products steer completely clear of GMOs, preservatives and artificial ingredients. The product is also vegan and kosher with no trans fat. In addition, the company prides itself on using ancient grains and unique ingredients from all over the world, including Teff (a high-calcium, nutty desert grain from the sub-Sahara), Chia (a flowering herb with highly nutritious seeds which was cultivated by the Aztec people in pre-Columbian times), Soy Sauce, Mango and more. Cabo Chips can now be found in more than seven states and many major U.S. supermarket chains including Whole Foods and Ralph’s.
BoomChickaPuffs – Booth #4457
You already know their low calorie popcorn, now steel yourself, they are making Cheese puffs! Healthy and crunchy, big ancient-grain puffs made with non-GMO corn, quinoa and sorghum that will turn it up. I loved their White Cheddar puffs, the sweeter versions like the Barbecue, not so much (I like my salty snacks salty!) But such a great packaging and presentation to behold, and the calories are less than traditional sorts. This company makes non-GMO and gluten-free snacks, including kettle corn, popcorn and baked ancient grain puffs, in a variety of flavors. It’s one of the fastest growing brands in the natural popcorn category and the growth is expected to continue. Angie’s continues to launch delicious flavors that remain true to the company’s promise of simple ingredients, transparency and great taste. Visit them on Twitter too: @Boomchickapop
Among Friends Baking Mixes – Booth #5251
J’adore. Molasses cookies = my favorite kind. Among Friends Shane’s Molasses Ginger cookie mix is a winner. Imagine a molasses cookie just like grandma’s… Spicy, but not too spicy and soft and chewy, but not too soft or chewy. Ingredient deck: Certified gluten-free oat flour, natural brown sugar, organic cane sugar, molasses granules (sucrose, molasses, cane caramel), organic ground flax seed, baking soda, sea salt, cinnamon, ginger, clove, lemon peel, star anise and seed. No cookie compromises for Shane (there’s a real Shane!). Gluten-free is just a bonus. Easy to make, add an egg, vanilla and some butter, stir, make cookie shapes and eat. Check out all their mixes at the Expo!
True Nopal cactus water – Booth #8214
I was not expecting to love this item. The flavor is best described as pleasantly watered down fruit drink, but with a crisp clean citrus-y finish. Serve cold, this is incredibly refreshing prickly pear water – an all natural ingredient hydrator that will quench thirst with no added sugars, no preservatives, no sodium, no GMO, and it’s even gluten-free. In other words, it’s straight from the earth just the way it was intended to be. True Nopal cactus water has about half the calories and half the sugar than the leading brand of coconut water.
Made from the prickly pear cactus, True Nopal Cactus Water has anti-inflammatory properties and is the new front-runner in the growing plant water category. It tastes better than its other plant water counterparts and cleanses the body with all 24 betalain antioxidants found in the cactus. Studies have shown that it can also be used as a hangover cure that hydrates the body before and after a great night on the town. I will never be without it again, Love this product. LOVE IT.
CedarLane Natural Foods – Booth #2866
For dinner last night, we tried this new line of frozen Tamales. Wrapped in corn husks in the traditional style, CedarLane’s Tamales are available in four vegetarian flavors: Chile & Cheese (which is what we dined on); Roasted Vegetable Tamale; Spinach & Feta Cheese; and Sweet Corn. Products are crafted at CedarLane’s headquarters in Carson, California and are all-natural, gluten-free, and a good source of protein and fiber. We steamed up the Chile & Cheese tamales which were a do-over, fork tender, buttery and not too cheese-y, they had a nice spice kick and were restaurant quality. Great frozen food entry and well worth your time and money.
Lightlife – Booth #3946
Fantastic array of meatless options, this Massachusetts small business turns out great items including a NEW savory sausage sweetened up with the taste of real organic apples. I love this company from my home state, in business since 1979. They are dedicated to making great tasting vegetarian food for a better you and a better planet. Bonus Intel: They have contributed 5% of their profits every year to organizations that support their ecological and ethical mission.Smart Ground Mexican is also a must try with its rich flavor seasoned with Mexican spices, for a healthy tasty version of tacos, nachos and stuffed peppers.
Quorn – Booth #5000
I have been one of the many children of the Quorn for a while. Have a desire to eat less meat but intimidated by meatless options? Quorn has you covered in easy to use freezer or fridge ground packs to make tacos, Bolognese sauce or burgers in a flash. Quorn’s main ingredient is Mycoprotein, a nutritionally healthy protein source. Mycoprotein is produced by a process of fermentation similar to that used for yeast in bread. Unlike other meat alternatives, there’s no strong aftertaste, and Quorn is great at absorbing the flavors used in cooking, making for great tasting meals. They have badass recipes too!
I love their packaging and the taste of ALL of their items…make sure to check out their how to make delicious chili in this video:
Nasoya Pasta Zero Noodles (Vitasoy USA) – Booth #3656
Noodles-and low carb? Gluten free, GMO free and vegan? Yassss! We were skeptical initially. HOWEVER we were pleasantly taken with this ready-to-use noodle item you parboil after rinsing and then use as you would any pasta or noodles in Asian or Italian dishes. Shirataki Pasta Zero Noodles are a traditional Japanese noodle made from the Konjac plant root, which is yam flour and water.
Pasta Zero shirataki noodles can be used just like traditional pasta or noodles in recipes. Unlike other shirataki noodles, Pasta Zero also contains chickpea flour giving the noodles a “real pasta” taste and texture without the excess carbs and calories. Pasta Zero noodles are also a good source of water-soluble dietary fiber helping consumers feel fuller longer. Shirataki noodles have little flavor but absorbs the delicious flavors you cook with.
Follow Your Heart Cheeses – Booth #2292
I am fortunate to live near their Cafe on Sherman Way in Canoga Park. The menu is always rocking fabulous dishes and the eclectic vibe makes it a must experience restaurant for those who eat cruelty free. This line of vegan cheese is simply the best tasting, melt-y and most cheese like non cheese out there. I made a grilled cheese yesterday with their American slices, it was so good:

Hnina – Booth #6018
Do you love chocolate? Are you a health freak? Concerned about sugar? Try this fantastic low sugar line. Hnina chocolate is raw, vegan, dairy free, unprocessed and has a very high cacao content. Hnina’s raw Dominican Republic single-origin 95% cacao, unpasteurized sprouted nuts and seeds, unrefined raw honey, pure commercial grade maple syrup and Bourbon vanilla beans are powerful sources of living enzymes, antioxidants, minerals, vitamins and proteins. The presentation is really special too.
All Hnina ingredients are traceable, certified Organic or compliant with organic farming methods even if not certified. Accordingly, all ingredients are non-GMO and free of pesticides and preservatives. They all have a low glycemic index and have a high protein, nutrients, vitamins, minerals and fiber content.
The nuts and seeds are raw, not fumigated or radiated. They are sprouted and lightly roasted. The honey is raw and unpasteurized. This honey is produced by bees directly from the concentrated nectar of flowers. Raw honey is an alkaline-forming food, which means that like fruits, it becomes alkaline in the digestive system. The vanilla beans used are from Madagascar. They are probably the best bean containing the strongest aroma and the most vanillin.
Red’s Natural Foods – Booth #5015
There are two new frozen entrees for lunch or dinner we recommend, their new line of frozen Red’s Burrito Bowls at Expo West 2015. First to market, Red’s Burrito Bowls are made with non-GMO ingredients and provide the same exceptional quality and taste as Red’s popular line of frozen 5 oz burritos but without the carb-laden tortilla. The new Red’s Chicken Burrito Bowl and Red’s Steak Burrito Bowl feature cilantro-lime rice, roasted corn, black beans, tomatillo salsa and either white meat chicken or beef steak—both raised without antibiotics. Both delicious and light. I preferred the chicken over the steak.
Sprout Organic Baby Food – Booth #5575
La Tourangelle – Booth #5336
Healthy oils and fats are so very good for you. Without fat we would miss out on vital nutrients – the vitamins A, D and E – and what are known as essential fatty acids which are needed to prevent conditions such as heart disease, cancers, immune system deficiencies, arthritis, skin complaints, PMS and manage menopausal symptoms.
I received these two spray oils above, and absolutely loved using them in my cooking this past week, especially the Sesame Spray Oil, when I pan-sauteed some steamed Trader Joe potstickers. La Tourangelle handcrafts award winning artisan nut oils in Woodland, California and Saumur, France strictly following 150-year-old traditional methods, and they also import the highest quality oils from like-minded artisan oil makers from around the world. Bibigo Gochujang Sauce – Booth #591 in Hall A
Super flavorful hot sauce from Korea. Gochujang is a traditional Korean fermented chilli pepper sauce. It is made from a cultured soybean base called meju, combined with premium sun-dried red chilli powder, rice powder, and salt. This versatile Korean culinary staple has arrived on the market with the label of Bibigo. Ready-to-use as a dip and also as an ingredient for cooking, it has a well-balanced blend of sweet, spicy and savory flavors that deliver exceptional heat to any meal. The sauce gets its great flavor from ingredients like sundried red peppers, rice, chopped garlic and onion puree, which are fermented to add complexity and depth.

Nature Nate’s – Booth #5058
Nathan Sheets, was inspired to explore the world of beekeeping when he saw an AT&T internet commercial with a woman in a bee suit, keeping bees. Soon after, his post-honeymoon hobby turned into a mission. Nature Nate’s pure, raw and unfiltered honey is treated with very low heat, keeping all important enzymes intact. It’s also unfiltered, which means it still contains pollen and retains the best flavor, aroma and nutrition naturally. Lastly, Nature Nate’s is made from 100% American bees, helping to eliminate pesticides, and ensuring a high-quality product.
After years of mixing jam and Nature Nate’s honey, they finally created their Nature Nate’s Honey Syrup, an addictive all natural, gluten free syrup with no additives such as high fructose corn syrup. We tried and loved the strawberry version. Based in Texas, Nature Nate’s is a slam dunk winner and a happy surprise for us, we loved everything we tried.
Way Better Snacks – Booth #5285
The new cracker fix is in: Mustard & Cheddar wins! Way Better takes the simple cracker and makes it, well, way better. Sprouting has been known to enhance the absorption of nutrients and aid in digestion. Barley is one of the oldest cultivated grains-highest in fiber of any whole grain and packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals essential to health, plus it boasts a rich, nutty flavor. By sprouting, they naturally eliminate the outer protective layer of seeds, beans and grains that makes them hard to digest. These are addictive, no toppings necessary.
G.H. Cretors – Booths #5562/5563
This is a bit of a guilty indulgence, but a whole grain snack made with quality ingredients. Cheesy, buttery and Caramel drenched and of course, Olive Oil and lower fat healthy versions of fresh popcorn await… whatever the mood. The Chicago Mix Popped Corn and the Just The Cheese and Just The Caramel Corn is pretty darn fabulous. They will be launching single serve bags of their Organic popcorn line at Expo West. Seven Sundays – Booth #5526
We fell in love with their Bircher (Unsweetened) Muesli. The Bircher Muesli is a Swiss-style muesli, untoasted and unsweetened. All of the delicious ingredients like almonds, apples, dates and cinnamon make this a go-to for yogurt toppings, cereal swaps and more. Our favorite way to serve it is soaked in cashew or almond milk, with yogurt, blueberries and a drizzle of maple syrup. Their Minne (Minnesota) Mueslis are perfect for an on-the-go, not too sweet, versatile and healthy breakfast. Stir in yogurt, hot water or cold milk and you’ve got instant and delicious fuel for your day. Great find, go see what this tasty American company is all about.

Sibu – Booth 3611
Sibu is a FANTASTIC premium, natural skincare and supplement line made from quality, wild-grown sea buckthorn berries sourced directly from the Himalayas. Sibu is a small family-run supplement and skincare business that began when founder Bruce McMullin came across the potent sea buckthorn berry. The company does it right and pays the harvesters a living wage (500% more than they were paid prior to Sibu’s involvement) and have created hundreds of jobs in the region. The Dalai Lama recognized Sibu at a local community event for their business practices and respectful treatment of our local harvesters. I was first introduced to this line as a skincare entry and loved all their items, especially the facial cleanser.
Omega 7 Pure (tart-do it as a shooter) and Sea Buckthorn Seed Oil (topical face oil before bedtime or makeup) are two items to look for. Omega 7 can be found in animal and plant sources, including macadamia nuts, cold-water fish and sea buckthorn berries. Sea buckthorn contains a much higher concentration of this valuable fatty acid, up to 40% as compared to 17% in macadamia nuts. While this omega has numerous skin and health benefits, it is also known for its ability to support a healthy weight, cardiovascular health, and gastro-intestinal health.
Taken internally, omega 7 fatty acid signals the body to stop storing fat. Clinical studies have shown that, not only do users melt away fat, but they also keep it off for longer periods. This amazing compound also helps the body maintain insulin sensitivity and fight off the imbalances that can result in metabolic syndrome. Insulin sensitivity plays a major role in helping the body convert glucose into energy, rather than storing it as fat. Research shows that omega 7 imitates a hormone in the body that helps regulate systemic metabolic activity. Sea buckthorn offers cardiovascular support, improved immune health, sustained energy levels and topically decreases fine lines and wrinkles and addresses eczema, rosacea and more.
