Adriana Lima walked her first Victoria’s Secret fashion show in 1999, and was so spectacular in her debut that she became a full angel prior to the 2000 show.
Since then, she has walked in the world-famous show every year aside from when she gave birth to her daughter Valentina.
Those 18 runway walks, and 19 years as an official angel, are historic. No one else has done what she has in terms of tenure, which is why it is no surprise her final walk was filled with emotion.
But why is she leaving Victoria’s Secret?
Time to walk a new path
Over the course of her career, it is estimated that Lima has accrued a net worth of around $75 million dollars, but as lucrative as that has been for the Brazilian born beauty, she has hinted on social media that the requirements angels are expected to adhere to, as well as the schedule, had taken their toll on her.
Last year speculation that she was going to leave Victoria’s Secret ran wild after she put up and Instagram post saying she would no longer take her clothes off for an “empty cause”. However, at the time her rep said she was still working with the brand and the comment came after she “received a recent offer where she was not aligned with the direction”.
Lima has now confirmed that she is leaving to spend time focusing on new projects centered around female empowerment.
She said in an interview: “I’m looking forward to support[ing] women and being connected to different projects which support women around the world. That [sic] like my future from now on but I am still happy that I am part of Victoria’s Secret this year.”
She also thanked the brand in an Instagram post celebrating her final Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, saying: “Dear Victoria, Thank you for showing me the world, sharing your secrets, and most importantly not just giving me wings but teaching me to fly.”
A first among lasts
Her final show marked the first time that her children, Valentina and Sienna, have ever seen their mother walk the runway for Victoria’s Secret.
My children will be here tonight. It’s going to be the first time watching the show. I can’t wait to see their reaction… I want to represent myself well under the eyes of my children. I hope I will make them happy.
Outpouring of support
While it has been difficult for many of Lima’s fans to see her end this era of her career, they have overwhelmingly supported her decision on Twitter, with many thanking her for the memories she has been a part of for them, her professionalism, and her kindness over the years. Buena suerte, and much success and happiness in all future endeavors, Adriana!
