Forest Gump said it best: “Award shows are like a box or chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get.”

Okay, so maybe the fictional character didn’t actually say that, but it sure is true. The movie The Favourite lead the pack at the 2019 Critics’ Choice Awards with an astounding 14 nominations but left the evening with only two wins.

Meanwhile, the Marvel superhero movie Black Panther, which took home nothing at the Golden Globes, won three awards. However, the big winner of the night belongs to Roma which won for Best Picture, Foreign Language Film, Director and Cinematography.

Airing last night on the The CW, the 24th annual Critics’ Choice Award were held at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. The show was hosted by Taye Diggs.

Although not as high profile or recognized as the Golden Globes or the Academy Awards, the Critics’ Choice Awards might actually appeal better to everyday audience members since their awards include more genre-specific ones, and it is considered by some as one of the most accurate predictors of the upcoming Oscars.

The awards show is presented by the Broadcast Film Critics Association and gives awards to both movie and television.

As for the television half of the award show, FX’s The Americans tied with Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel for three wins, FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story won two awards and NBC was the only traditional TV network to win an award for Best TV Movie (Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert).
