Washington – The elite of America’s political and artistic worlds have joined together to honour Robert Redford, Tina Turner and others in the annual Kennedy Center Awards, the most prestigious arts prize in the U.S.
Also honoured for their lifetime contributions to U.S. culture were veteran singer Tony Bennett, ballerina Suzanne Farrell and actress Julie Harris.
‘Each of these honourees, in a lifetime of achievement, has set a standard of excellence that is admired throughout the world,’ said President George W. Bush at the ceremony Sunday night. ‘All of them have earned a unique place in the cultural life of the United States and a special respect among their fellow Americans.’
Also attending the show was Vice President Dick Cheney, Senator Edward Kennedy, and entertainers Paul Newman, Oprah Winfrey, Beyonce Knowles and others.
