The 1000th UK singles chart number one spot looks likely to be taken by Elvis Presley.
Despite having been dead for nearly thirty years the King of rock ‘n’ roll looks like he will once again take top spot. Presley’s 1959 chart hit ‘One Night’ is predicted to take the number one spot when the chart is announced later today, this will be his 20th chart topper.
Elvis had his first number one on the 53-year-old UK charts in 1957 with ‘All Shook Up’ and followed this with string of number ones. Earlier this year he took another with the re-release of ‘Jailhouse Rock.’
However, the number of singles sold it takes to get to the number one position is far less than it used to be. For example ‘Jailhouse Rock’ only had to sell 20,000 odd copies to reach number one, whereas in the past some number one’s have sold over a million copies.
Industry commentators put this down to people using the Internet to download albums and single tracks.
Perhaps a good reason for including the figures from companies like i-tunes in the chart…Note the date on this article may be incorrect due to importing it from our old system.
